Mingachevir
Mingachevir ( az, Mingəçevir ) is the fourth-largest city in Azerbaijan with a population of about 106,000. It's often called the "city of lights" because of its hydroelectric power station on the Kur River, which divides the city down the middle. The current city was founded in 1948, partly by German prisoners of war captured during World War II. Mingechevir is also home to Mingachevir Polytechnic Institute. The city forms an administrative division of Azerbaijan. The district is located 323 km from Baku and 17 km from the Baku-Tbilisi railway. Geographically, the region is located in the center of the republic on both sides of the Kura River. History The archaeological history of this area extends from the eneolith era (3000 BC) to the AD 17th century. Ilham Heydar oghlu Aliyev ( az, İlham Heydər oğlu Əliyev, ; born 24 December 1961) is the fourth president of Azerbaijan, serving in the post since 31 October 2003. The son and second child of the former Azerbaijani leader Heydar Aliyev, Ilham Aliyev became president of Azerbaijan in 2003 following his father's death, in an 2003 Azerbaijani presidential election, election defined by election fraud. Mingechevir Polytechnic Institute (MPI) ( az, Mingəçevir Politexnik İnstitutu), sometimes written Mingecevir Polytechnic Institute, is a public institute of technology located in Mingechevir, Azerbaijan. It is a coeducational higher education institution, officially accredited and/or recognized by the Ministry of Education of Azerbaijan. Mingechevir Politexnik Institutu (MPI) offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor's degrees in several areas of study. The university has two departments, approximately 1200 students, including a dozen graduate students, and a faculty and staff of approximately 150.
