Minden Coalfield
The Minden Coalfield (german: Mindener Revier) is located in the northern Wiehen foothills near the German town of Minden. Here, seams of Wealden Coal (''Wealdenkohle'') reach the surface of the earth in the Schaumburg Basin (''Schaumburger Mulde''). During the Thirty Years' War Swedish soldiers first discovered this black coal near Minden whilst preparing fieldworks on the Bölhorst. By 1663 it was forbidden to dig privately for coal and severe penalties were imposed for doing so. A series of shaft systems were sunk increasingly deeper into the earth. Coal continued to be mined until 1 August 1958, for example in the Barsinghausen coalfield (''Barsinghausener Revier'') east of Minden in the Deister. The last mine in this coalfield was the Minden Coal Mine (''Kohlenbergwerk Minden'') in Meißen. Geology The Wealden near Minden divides into the thick Lower Wealden Shale (''Unterer Wealdenschieferton'') and the thick Upper Wealden Shale (''Oberer Wealdenschieferton''). The ...

Geography This is the northernmost district of North Rhine-Westphalia. It protrudes into Lower Saxon territory. The Weser River enters the district in the southeast and leaves to the north. In the south of the district the river runs through a narrow gorge, which is formed by two mountain chains, the Wiehen Hills in the west and the Wesergebirge in the east. This gorge is called Porta Westfalica, since it marks the ancient border of Westphalia. History Minden-Lübbecke is roughly identical with the medieval Bishopric of Minden. At its biggest extent in the 13th century, it later lost territory until it came finally to be around the size of today's district. In the 17th century the principality came into the possession of Brandenburg and thus Prussia. Lost for a time to Napoleonic France, it ...

Economy Of North Rhine-Westphalia
North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) has always been Germany's powerhouse with the largest economy among the German states by GDP figures. If NRW were a sovereign country, it would have an economy comparable to that of Switzerland in terms of nominal gross domestic product (GDP) as of 2020. Of all German states, most money from abroad is invested in NRW. In the 1950s and 1960s, the state was known as the ''Land von Kohle und Stahl'' (land of coal and steel). In the post-WWII recovery, the Ruhr was one of the most important industrial regions in Europe, and contributed to the German Wirtschaftswunder. As of the late 1960s, repeated crises had led to contractions of these industrial branches. On the other hand, producing sectors, particularly in mechanical engineering and metal and iron working industries, experienced substantial growth. Some former coal mining areas retain high unemployment rates. Despite this structural change and an economic growth which was under the national avera ...
