Mind Made Up
''Mind Made Up'' is the ninth studio album by English post-punk band A Certain Ratio. Released in 2008 through French Le Maquis record label, it is the band's first album since 1997's ''Change the Station'', following a series of re-issues of past material. The band sought to capture a live sound during the recording of the album. The album was reissued by on 2 June 2010 through LTM Recordings with two extra tracks. Critical reception The album generally received positive reviews. AllMusic critic Ned Raggett thought that ''Mind Made Up'' "found the group in creative health while approaching 30 years of work and beyond". Raggett also wrote that the record "feels more like them keeping on rather than trying to stake out a space in a crowded musical landscape." Martin Longley of BBC stated: "These songs reinforce a formula, but it's ACR's very own formula, and one that still remains highly distinctive." A Certain Ratio
A Certain Ratio (abbreviated as ACR) are an English post-punk band formed in 1977 in Flixton, Greater Manchester by Peter Terrell (guitar, electronics) and Simon Topping (vocals, trumpet), with additional members Jez Kerr (bass, vocals), Martin Moscrop (trumpet, guitar), Donald Johnson (drums), and Martha Tilson (vocals) joining soon after. Among the first white indie groups to draw heavy influence from funk as well as disco and Latin percussion, the band were among the first to debut on Tony Wilson's Factory Records in 1979 with "All Night Party," produced by Martin Hannett. During ACR's early years with Factory, they scored seven Top Ten U.K. independent releases, highlighted by "Flight" and "Waterline," and released five albums beginning with ''The Graveyard and the Ballroom'' (1979). Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of punk music that emerged in the late 1970s as musicians departed from punk's traditional elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Funk
Funk is a music genre that originated in African American communities in the mid-1960s when musicians created a rhythmic, danceable new form of music through a mixture of various music genres that were popular among African Americans in the mid-20th century. It de-emphasizes melody and chord progressions and focuses on a strong rhythmic groove of a bassline played by an electric bassist and a drum part played by a percussionist, often at slower tempos than other popular music. Funk typically consists of a complex percussive groove with rhythm instruments playing interlocking grooves that create a "hypnotic" and "danceable" feel. Change The Station
''Change the Station'' is an album by English band A Certain Ratio, released under the acronym ACR in January 1997. Released on Rob's Records label, it was the band's first album after a five-year hiatus, since 1992's ''Up in Downsville''. The album finds the band working from a dance-pop and ambient music foundation, with elements from Madchester funk and ambient house. The record also features vocals from singers Denise Johnson and Lorna Bailey. Critical reception AllMusic senior critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine thought that the record "finds A Certain Ratio in top form." Erlewine also praised Johnson and Bailey's vocals, writing that their "soulful singing gives the songs dimension, helping make ''Change the Station'' a genuine return to form." ''Clash'' is a music and fashion magazine and website based in the United Kingdom. It is published four times a year by Music Republic Ltd, whose predecessor Clash Music Ltd went into liquidation. LTM Recordings (originally les temps modernes) is a British independent record label founded in 1983, and best known for reissues of artists and music from 1978 to the present day, as well as modern classical and avant-garde composition. The label is based in Norfolk, England, and is curated by James Nice. Particularly notable are reissues of catalogue originally released by Factory Records, Les Disques du Crépuscule, Compact Organisation and Sarah Records. Mastering, a form of audio post production, is the process of preparing and transferring recorded audio from a source containing the final mix to a data storage device (the master), the source from which all copies will be produced (via methods such as pressing, duplication or replication). In recent years digital masters have become usual, although analog masters—such as audio tapes—are still being used by the manufacturing industry, particularly by a few engineers who specialize in analog mastering.
