A mill town, also known as factory town or mill village, is typically a settlement that developed around one or more mills or factories, usually cotton mills or factories producing textiles. Mill Village is a Canadian rural community in the Region of Queens Municipality, Nova Scotia. It developed in relation to the lumber industry. Located inland from the Atlantic coast, Mill Village was the site of Canada's first satellite earth station constructed in the 1960s. History Historically developed around logging and lumber, Mill Village lies along the Medway River. It has many old structures related to these industries pre-dating the era of cheap fuel. Mill Village is a borough in Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 394 at the 2020 census, down from 412 during the 2010 census. It is part of the Erie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography Mill Village is located in southern Erie County at (41.876050, -79.972607). It is surrounded by LeBoeuf Township. U.S. Route 6 passes through the borough, leading east to Union City and southwest to Cambridge Springs. Erie is to the north. According to the United States Census Bureau, Mill Village has a total area of , all land. It sits on the eastern edge of the valley of French Creek, part of the Allegheny River watershed. Mooresville Mill Village Historic District is a national historic district located at Mooresville, Iredell County, North Carolina. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. History of the site The mill village was built by the Mooresville Cotton Mills in the early 20th century to house local workers. Like many mill villages of the south, Mooresville Mill Village was a self-sufficient village within the town limits of Mooresville. Between 1902 and 1930, over 400 homes were built to provide housing for the influx of workers coming to work at the cotton mill. A variety of floor plans were built over the time of construction. The earliest homes, shown on the 1902 and 1908 Sanborn maps of Mooresville, were mainly 3-room, T-shaped houses with front and back porches. In 1916–17, the mill added 4- and 5-room houses. Peppermill Village is an unincorporated community near Maryland Route 214 (Central Avenue) in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. Per the 2020 census, the population was 5,264. FedExField, Metrorail's Blue Line, and Hampton Mall shopping center are all located nearby. Because it is not formally incorporated, it has no official boundaries, but the United States Census Bureau has defined a census-designated place (CDP) consisting of Peppermill Village and the adjacent community of Carmody Hills, for statistical purposes.
