Military Prison
A military prison is a prison operated by a military. Military prisons are used variously to house prisoners of war, unlawful combatants, those whose freedom is deemed a national security risk by the military or national authorities, and members of the military found guilty of a serious crime. Thus, military prisons are of two types: penal, for punishing and attempting to reform members of the military who have committed an offense, and confinement-oriented, where captured enemy combatants are confined for military reasons until hostilities cease. Military jail Most militaries have some sort of military police unit operating at the divisional level or below to perform many of the same functions as civilian police, from traffic-control to the arrest of violent offenders and the supervision of detainees and prisoners of war. Australia The Australian Defence Force states it has no prisons. Instead they have a single facility, the Defence Force Correctional Establishment, which aim ...

Prison
A prison, also known as a jail, gaol (dated, standard English, Australian, and historically in Canada), penitentiary (American English and Canadian English), detention center (or detention centre outside the US), correction center, correctional facility, lock-up, hoosegow or remand center, is a facility in which inmates (or prisoners) are confined against their will and usually denied a variety of freedoms under the authority of the state as punishment for various crimes. Prisons are most commonly used within a criminal justice system: people charged with crimes may be imprisoned until their trial; those pleading or being found guilty of crimes at trial may be sentenced to a specified period of imprisonment. In simplest terms, a prison can also be described as a building in which people are legally held as a punishment for a crime they have committed. Prisons can also be used as a tool of political repression by authoritarian regimes. Their perceived opponents may be ...

Israeli Military Prison
The Israeli Military Prison is a prison for guarding soldiers who committed crimes during their service. Prison sector history The need to create prisons in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) arose as the soldiers' discipline deteriorated over the course of the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. At first, detention centers were built in the infantry brigades' bases under the auspices of the Manpower Directorate. The prison sector of the Israeli Military Police was founded in June 1948. It was originally called Military Police Prisons ( he, משטרה צבאית בתי הסוהר), under a Prisons Officer. The sector was slated to include military prisons under the command of the military police, as well as brigade detention centers, for light prisoners, subordinate to the respective brigades. The first Israeli military prison was built on the ruins of al-Shaykh Muwannis (now North Tel Aviv), under Captain Yoel Caspi. Immediately smaller prisons were erected in Acre, Jaffa and Jerusalem. The fac ...

Aldershot
Aldershot () is a town in Hampshire, England. It lies on heathland in the extreme northeast corner of the county, southwest of London. The area is administered by Rushmoor Borough Council. The town has a population of 37,131, while the Aldershot Urban Area, a loose conurbation (which also includes other towns such as Camberley, Farnborough, and Farnham) has a population of 243,344, making it the thirtieth-largest urban area in the UK. Aldershot is known as the "Home of the British Army", a connection which led to its rapid growth from a small village to a Victorian town. History Early history The name may have derived from alder trees found in the area (from the Old English 'alder-holt' meaning copse of alder trees). Any settlement, though not mentioned by name, would have been included as part of the Hundred of Crondall referred to in the Domesday Book of 1086. The Church of St Michael the Archangel is the parish church for the town and dates to the 12th century with la ...

Aldershot Military Prison
Aldershot military prison, known as the Glasshouse on account of its glazed roof, was the military prison in Aldershot in Hampshire from 1870 until it was burned down during riots in February 1946 and was finally demolished in 1958. History The Glasshouse was one of the most imposing buildings in the 19th-century Aldershot military town. Built in 1870 to house soldiers sentenced for military offences, the building derived its name from its large, glass lantern roof. The term '' glasshouse'' has since become synonymous with all military prison establishments but it has its origins in Aldershot.'Inside the Glasshouse' - the ''Picture Post'', 30 May 1942 Aldershot's first military prison opened in 1856 and was made up of standard wooden barrack huts in the North and South Camp and holding around 200 prisoners. An 1864 report from the Inspector of Military Prisons called for the rebuilding of the military prison in cell formation 'to prevent the evils of association'. Re-building ...

Glasshouse (British Army)
A glasshouse, or the glasshouse is a military prison in the United Kingdom. History The first military prisons were established in 1844. The term ''Glasshouse'' originated from the Aldershot military prison, Aldershot, which had a glazed roof. Over time, the word ''glasshouse'' came to be applied to all military prisons. Aldershot military prison, which was also called the Detention Barracks, had begun as several barracks in 1856, before being replaced by a single, large building, modelled on the then civilian prison system in 1870. This building was destroyed by fire in a riot of 1946 when the prisoners (labeled as 'mutineers' in the press) were protesting about their rations and conditions given that the Second World War was over. Glasshouses gained a reputation for brutality, as depicted in Allan Campbell McLean's novel ''The Glass House'' and the Sean Connery film '' The Hill''. Today, the British Armed Forces have only one remaining correction facility, the Military Corre ...

The Vatican City, an independent state, does not have a prison system, so the Vatican sends convicted criminals to the Italian prison system. According to Interpol, this force (as part of the Ministry of Justice) has a "nationwide remit for prison security, inmate safety and transportation". History The ''Polizia Penitenziaria'' was formed in 1990 to replace the former ''Corpo degli Agenti di Custodia''. Professionalization and demilitarization were motives for creating the new organisation. Polizia Di Stato
The ''Polizia di Stato'' (State Police or P.S.) is one of the national police forces of Italy. Alongside the Carabinieri, it is the main police force for providing police duties, primarily to cities and large towns, and with its child agencies it is also responsible for highway patrol (''autostrade''), railways (''ferrovie''), airports (''aeroporti''), customs (together with the ''Guardia di Finanza'') as well as certain waterways, and assisting the local police forces. It was a military force until 1981 when the Italian State Law 121 was passed. This converted the State Police to a civil force, which is in contrast to the other main police forces of Italy: the '' Arma dei Carabinieri'', which is a military police (gendarmerie) force and the ''Guardia di Finanza'', the Italian customs and border protection police that also falls in the military corps category. The ''Polizia di Stato'' is the principal Italian police force for the maintenance of public security and as such it i ...
