The Belize Defence Force (BDF) is the military of Belize, and is responsible for protecting the sovereignty of the country. The BDF is under the Ministry of National Defence and Border Security, which is currently headed by Hon. Florencio Marin Jr.; the BDF itself is commanded by Brigadier General Azariel Loria. In 2012, the Belizean government spent about $17 million on the military, constituting 1.08% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). Law enforcement in Belize is conducted by the Belize Police Department headed by a Commissioner and headquartered in Belize City. About The Belize Police Department is descended from the British Honduras Constabulary (BHC), which was established in 1886. Constabulary personnel initially numbered 141 and were recruited in Barbados because local men showed no interest in enlisting. The government assigned the early police the task of preserving law and order in the colony. The Constabulary was at first a paramilitary force, but in 1902, it was made into a civil police force. 25 Flight Army Air Corps is a flight within the British Army's Army Air Corps, currently part of the British Army Training Unit Kenya. History The flight was formed in 1987 in Belize where it operated Sioux AH1 helicopters. The flight returned to Middle Wallop in August 2011. The flight supported UK peacetime operations and training including the security arrangements for the 2012 Summer Olympics which were held mostly in London but also at smaller locations throughout the UK. British Army Training Support Unit Belize (BATSUB), the successor of the former British Forces Belize, is the name given to the current British Army Garrison in Belize.
