Military Railway Service (United States)
The Military Railway Service was created in the 1920s as a reserve force for the Quartermaster Division of the United States Army. It had existed twice before: first as the United States Military Railroad during the American Civil War, and later by the United States Railroad Administration during World War I. In the original documentation for the service, all Class I railroad companies were to create a battalion for the war effort. In doing so, 11 Grand Divisions were formed and 46 operating battalions were assigned; however, five were never activated. Carl Raymond Gray (1867–1939) was an American railroad executive in the early 20th century. He was President of the Great Northern Railway (U.S.) from 1912 to 1914, and of the Western Maryland Railway from 1914 to 1919, and lastly of the Union Pacific Railroad from 1920 to 1937. Biography During his tenure, the Union Pacific Railroad was one of a very few American railroads that paid dividends on the company's common stock during the Great Depression. Gray was instrumental in developing the Union Pacific Railroad's burgeoning streamliner passenger train fleet, which included the famous M-10000 series of trainsets. The Reading Company ( ) was a Philadelphia-headquartered railroad that provided passenger and commercial rail transport in eastern Pennsylvania and neighboring states that operated from 1924 until its 1976 acquisition by Conrail. Commonly called the Reading Railroad, and logotyped as Reading Lines, the Reading Company was a railroad holding company for the majority of its existence and was a single railroad during its later years. Camp Claiborne was a U.S. Army military camp in the 1930s continuing through World War II located in Rapides Parish in central Louisiana. The camp was under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Eighth Service Command, and included 23,000 acres (93 km²). The camp was just north of the town of present-day Forest Hill, near the intersection of U.S. Highway 165 and Louisiana Highway 112. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway , often referred to as the Santa Fe or AT&SF, was one of the larger railroads in the United States. The railroad was chartered in February 1859 to serve the cities of Atchison, Kansas, Atchison and Topeka, Kansas, and Santa Fe, New Mexico. The railroad reached the Kansas–Colorado border in 1873 and Pueblo, Colorado, in 1876. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the first common carrier railroad and the oldest railroad in the United States, with its first section opening in 1830.
