Military Battery Of Espalamaca
The Military Battery of Espalamaca ( pt, Bateria de Costa da Ponta da Espalamaca), also known as the ''Position of Espalamaca'' ( pt, Posição da Espalamaca) or the ''Fort of Espalamaca'' ( pt, Forte da Espalamaca), is located over the promontory of Espalamaca, civil parish of Conceição, municipality of Horta, in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. History The fortifications were constructed in 1941, during the Second World War, in order to defend the port of Horta and the channel between Faial and Pico, anchorage for ships and transiting Allied forces. It was built in order to work in conjunction with the artillery batteries of Monte da Guia and anti-aircraft battery at Monte Carneiro. Along with the battery at Monte da Guia, the posts were garrisoned by members of the ''Bateria Independente de Defesa da Costa'' (BIDC3), each with their own sub-alternate officials, six sargents or militia, and 20 soldiers. Portuguese Ironclad Vasco Da Gama
''Vasco da Gama'' was an ironclad of the Portuguese Navy built in the 1870s by the Thames Iron Works in London. Ordered to strengthen the defenses of the Portuguese capital of Lisbon, ''Vasco da Gama'' was launched in 1876 and completed in 1878. She served as the flagship of the Portuguese fleet for the majority of her long and peaceful career. She was rebuilt and heavily modernized between 1901 and 1903. The Historical Institute of Terceira, or literally the ''Historical Institute of the Island of Terceira'' ( pt, Instituto Histórico da Ilha Terceira), or IHIT, is a private association and cultural institute, dedicated to the investigation and studying of the islands of the Azores. The institute is headquartered in the classical '' Convent of São Francisco'' (''Convent of Saint Francis of Assis'') in Angra do Heroísmo. Conceição is a ''freguesia'' ("civil parish") in the municipality of Horta in the Portuguese Azores. The population in 2011 was 1,138, in an area of 3.08 km². The Faial-Pico Channel ( pt, Canal Faial-Pico) is an long channel that separates the islands of Faial Island, Faial and Pico Island, Pico in the central group of the archipelago of the Azores. The strait is divided into various depressions, calderas and micro-systems, referred to as ''Baixas''.
