Black Dice
Black Dice is an American experimental noise music band based in Brooklyn, New York and consisting of brothers Bjorn and Eric Copeland along with Aaron Warren. Formed in 1997, the group was initially inspired by hardcore and noise rock, but subsequently shifted toward the extensive use of signal processing, effects units, and electronic instrumentation. They released their debut album '' Beaches & Canyons'' in 2002. They have recorded for labels such as DFA, Fat Cat, and Animal Collective's Paw Tracks. History Early years Black Dice formed in spring 1997 soon after guitarist Bjorn Copeland met drummer Hisham Bharoocha and bassist Sebastian Blanck when they were students at the Rhode Island School of Design. DFA Records
DFA Records is an American independent record label founded in 2001 by Mo' Wax co-founder Tim Goldsworthy, musician James Murphy, and manager Jonathan Galkin. They previously had a production team called The DFA, consisting of Goldsworthy and Murphy. History James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy met while working in New York on the David Holmes album '' Let's Get Killed''. After the recording was completed, Goldsworthy stayed in New York, and the two began to throw parties in the Lower East Side. They created the production duo, The DFA, but wished to grow The DFA into more than what it was. It was not until they met Jonathan Galkin, who subsequently quit his event-production job to work with James and Tim, that they turned DFA into a label. ''Beaches & Canyons'' is the first full-length album by experimental noise band Black Dice, released in 2002 on DFA and FatCat. It was named the 9th best album of 2000–2009 by ''Tiny Mix Tapes''. Background This album presents a transition in sound for Black Dice, specifically from their earlier roots in hardcore to a more experimental, meditative sound. When asked about their change in direction, band member Eric Copeland said: "Our shows used to be 'all songs.' Then it would be songs with these long transitions between things, instead of just flat or silent. When Aaron came along, we got better at that stuff, and that became more what we wanted to play. Playing the songs became secondary". The band recorded the album in four or five days without any label deal, borrowing money from the Copelands' father to fund the sessions. ''Creature Comforts'' is the second album by United States, American experimental noise band Black Dice. It was released in June 2004 by DFA Records (USA) and FatCat Records, Fat Cat Records (UK). The album, according to Kory Grow of ''CMJ New Music Monthly'', is "Black Dice's ''musique concrète'' take on animal noises, including replicated elephant sounds, duck calls and even sparrow chirps". Background The album was preceded by the ''Miles of Smiles'' EP in March of the same year. Most tracks were recorded at the Water Music, Rare Book Room and DFA's Plantain studios in New York City. "Live Loop" is a live-recording from the 2001 Summer Tour 2001. Both James Murphy (electronic musician), James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy assisted with the recording while Steve Revitte mixed the album.
