The Smithereens
The Smithereens are an American rock band from Carteret, New Jersey, United States. The group formed in 1980 with members Pat DiNizio (vocals & guitar), Jim Babjak (guitar & vocals), Mike Mesaros (bass guitar & vocals), and Dennis Diken (drums & percussion). This original lineup continued until 2006, when Mesaros left the band and Severo Jornacion took over on bass guitar until Mesaros' return in 2016. After DiNizio died in 2017, the band continued performing live shows as a trio (Babjak, Mesaros and Diken) with various guest vocalists. The band are perhaps best known for a string of hits in the late 1980s through the mid-1990s, including "Only a Memory", " A Girl Like You" and " Too Much Passion". The Smithereens have collaborated with numerous musicians, both in the studio (Belinda Carlisle, Julian Lennon, Lou Reed, Suzanne Vega) and live (Graham Parker and The Kinks). ''A Date with the Smithereens'' is the fifth album by the New Jersey rock band The Smithereens, released in 1994. It is seen as a stylistically consistent with the melodic pop sensibilities of their earliest albums, along with the more rock-driven sound and production of their most commercially successful releases. Details Producer Butch Vig left the project prior to the recording of the album, which may have inspired some of the "bitterness" expressed in this album. The album was originally planned to be released about a year before it actually was, but Capitol Records was near dropping The Smithereens. The reason for this was a change in leadership at the label. Patrick Michael DiNizio (October 12, 1955 – December 12, 2017) was the lead singer, songwriter, and founding member of the band The Smithereens, which he formed in 1980 with Jim Babjak, Dennis Diken, and Mike Mesaros, from Carteret, New Jersey. Life and career DiNizio was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, and grew up in nearby Scotch Plains, where he attended Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. Don Dixon (musician)
Don Dixon (born December 13, 1950) is an American record producer, songwriter, and musician. He is considered to be one of the key producers of what is called the jangle pop movement of the early 1980s, including working with R.E.M. and The Smithereens. Early life Dixon was born in Lancaster, South Carolina. He says he learned to play the bass guitar in junior high school "because of the control that it offered". He said, "I bought a bass, one of those great Danelectro Silvertones, and I wish I had it back. From Sears for $79. Then a few months later I really liked upright, so I found an old upright in a church in Charlotte, and just was sort of self-taught on those things, but I could read music." At the age of fifteen, he made his first recording, playing upright bass with jazz musician Louis McGloughn in Charlotte, North Carolina. He also sang in church. Too Much Passion
"Too Much Passion" is a song by the American alternative rock group The Smithereens. It is the second single released in support of their fourth album '' Blow Up''. It hit #8 on the Cash Box Top 100 (dated April 18, 1992) as well as #37 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also provided Smithereens with their first, and to date, only Adult Contemporary charting song, reaching #32 on that chart. In the Smithereens guitar book, Pat DiNizio explains that he wrote the song to sound like the style of Smokey Robinson.
