Miles Historical Village And Museum
The Miles Historical Village and Museum is an open-air museum located near the town of Miles, Queensland, Australia. The village consists of 30 buildings, replicas of ones built during the time period of the 1920s. Region history This area was first named Dogwood Crossing by the explorer Ludwig Leichhardt. The town was later named Miles when the railway was being constructed in 1878, after William Miles who was a member of parliament and owned a property 'Dulacca' in the area. When more people settled in this area, in the early days there were a lot of dairy farms. The land is really not suitable for dairying, so in later years farmers have turned to growing wheat and there was also a lot of cotton grown. In the early days Prickly Pear was a menace, it is believed it was brought to Australia as a pot plant. Wandoan Branch Railway
The Wandoan Branch is a 70 km railway line in the Darling Downs region Queensland, Australia. It links the towns of Miles and Wandoan. It was approved to extend to Taroom, but construction halted during World War I and never recommenced. History The Western Line from Brisbane reached Miles in August 1878. Taroom, about 120 kilometres to the north of Miles, later became an established pastoral region and a line in that direction was proposed to promote closer settlement. Approval was given in 1910 for construction of the first section to Wandoan (then called Juandah) and the line opened from Miles as far as Giligulgul on 20 December 1913. Sidings enroute were Dalwogan (now Dalwogon), Kowguran and Gurulmundi. On 11 August 1913, during construction of the Miles-Taroom section, a ballast train collided with several cattle from Miles. The Queensland Railways C17 class locomotive was a class of 4-8-0 steam locomotives operated by the Queensland Railways. History The C17 class was introduced as an improved version of the C16 class. Per Queensland Railway's classification system they were designated the C17 class, C representing they had four driving axles, and 17 representing the cylinder diameter in inches.
