''Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall'' is a live album by American jazz musician Miles Davis. Subtitled ''The Legendary Performances of May 19, 1961'', it was released by Columbia Records as CL 1812 in monaural and CS 8612 as "electronically re-channeled for stereo." This live performance features Davis with his regular quintet and also accompanied by Gil Evans and his 21-piece orchestra. The orchestra is heard on several selections drawn from '' Miles Ahead'' as well as a complete reading of the adagio movement from ''Concierto de Aranjuez'' as recorded on ''Sketches of Spain''. The concert begins with the orchestra playing the Gil Evans introduction to " So What", which is performed by the quintet, and then segues directly into the only recording of an Evans arrangement of "Spring is Here". Miles Dewey Davis III (May 26, 1926September 28, 1991) was an American trumpeter, bandleader, and composer. He is among the most influential and acclaimed figures in the history of jazz and 20th-century music. Davis adopted a variety of musical directions in a five-decade career that kept him at the forefront of many major stylistic developments in jazz. Born in Alton, Illinois, and raised in East St. Louis, Davis left to study at Juilliard in New York City, before dropping out and making his professional debut as a member of saxophonist Charlie Parker's bebop quintet from 1944 to 1948. Shortly after, he recorded the ''Birth of the Cool'' sessions for Capitol Records, which were instrumental to the development of cool jazz. ''Miles Ahead'' is an album by Miles Davis that was released in October 1957 by Columbia Records. It was Davis' first collaboration with arranger Gil Evans following the ''Birth of the Cool'' sessions. Along with their subsequent collaborations ''Porgy and Bess'' (1959) and ''Sketches of Spain'' (1960), ''Miles Ahead'' is one of the most famous recordings of Third Stream, a fusion of jazz, European classical, and world musics. Davis played flugelhorn throughout. Background Evans combined the ten pieces that make up the album into a suite, each flowing into the next without interruption; the only exception to this rule was on the title track since it was placed last on side A (this has been corrected on the CD versions). ''Walkin'' (PRLP 7076) is a Miles Davis compilation album released in March 1957 by Prestige Records. The album compiles material previously released on two 10 inch LPs in 1954 (''Miles Davis All-Star Sextet'' and Side One of ''Miles Davis Quintet'', dropping "I'll Remember April" from Side Two (which had been on the 12" LP ''Blue Haze'', released the previous year, itself a collection of tunes from previous 10" LPs) and replacing it with the previously unreleased "Love Me or Leave Me" recorded at the same session. Here credited to the "Miles Davis All-Stars", the songs were recorded on 3 April and 29 April 1954 by two slightly different groups led by Davis. Lawrence L. Morey (March 26, 1905 – May 8, 1971) was an American lyricist and screenwriter. Walter Theodore "Sonny" Rollins (born September 7, 1930) is an American jazz tenor saxophonist who is widely recognized as one of the most important and influential jazz musicians. Lorenz Milton Hart (May 2, 1895 – November 22, 1943) was an American lyricist and half of the Broadway songwriting team Rodgers and Hart. Some of his more famous lyrics include " Blue Moon", " The Lady Is a Tramp", "Manhattan", "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered", and "My Funny Valentine".
