Mildred Richardson
Mildred Richardson (19 July 1893 – 28 June 1987) was a British competitive pair skater. With her husband Tyke Richardson, she represented Great Britain at the 1924 Winter Olympics, where they were placed 8th. Early life Richardson was born as Fanny Mildred Allingham on 19 July 1893. She was a talented singer in her youth but gave it up as she became involved in ice skating. Ice Skating Before the First World War, Richardson won a number of ice dancing competitions with her partner and future husband T.D. Richardson. They married in 1915 and after the war resumed competing including representing Great Britain at the 1924 Winter Olympics. In 1936 she was a non-playing captain of the British figure skating team at the 1936 Winter Olympics. Pair Skating
Pair skating is a figure skating discipline defined by the International Skating Union (ISU) as "the skating of two persons in unison who perform their movements in such harmony with each other as to give the impression of genuine Pair Skating as compared with independent Single Skating".S&P/ID 2021, p. 109 The ISU also states that a pairs team consists of "one Woman and one Man". Pair skating, along with men's and women's single skating, has been an Olympic discipline since figure skating, the oldest Winter Olympic sport, was introduced at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London. The ISU World Figure Skating Championships introduced pair skating in 1908. Like the other disciplines, pair skating competitions consist of two segments, the short program and the free skating program. Great Britain At The 1924 Winter Olympics
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland competed as Great Britain at the 1924 Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France. Based on medal count, this was Great Britain's best ever performance at a Winter Olympic Games until the 2014 games were held in Sochi in Russia. On February 3, Great Britain won two medals on one day. This was not to be bettered until the 2018 games when 3 medals were won on one day. The 1936 Winter Olympics, officially known as the IV Olympic Winter Games (german: IV. Olympische Winterspiele) and commonly known as Garmisch-Partenkirchen 1936 ( bar, Garmasch-Partakurch 1936), were a winter multi-sport event held from 6 to 16 February 1936 in the market town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. The country also hosted the 1936 Summer Olympics, which were held in Berlin. International Skating Union
The International Skating Union (ISU) is the international governing body for competitive ice skating disciplines, including figure skating, synchronized skating, speed skating, and short track speed skating. It was founded in Scheveningen, Netherlands, in July 1892, making it one of the oldest international sport federations. British Ice Skating (formerly the National Ice Skating Association) is the national governing body of ice skating within the United Kingdom. Formed in 1879, it is responsible for overseeing all disciplines of ice skating: figure skating (singles, pairs and ice dance); synchronised skating; and speed skating (including short track).
