Milam, Texas
Milam is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sabine County, Texas, United States. It is located along the Sabine River at the junction of Highway 87 and Highway 21. The population was 1,355 at the 2020 census. Milam is the largest city in Sabine County. Geography Milam is located at (31.453492, -93.785384). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , of which is land and (1.71%) is water. Historical development With an approximate settling date of 1828, it was originally dubbed ''Red Mound'', but was renamed again in honor of Benjamin Rush Milam (a famous figure in the Texas Revolution) when it became the municipal seat of Sabine County in 1836. Because an increasing number of residents wanted a more central location for the county seat, in 1858 they designated the newly platted town of Hemphill, Texas to fill that role. Benjamin Rush Milam
Benjamin Rush "Ben" Milam (October 20, 1788 – December 7, 1835) was an American colonist of Mexican Texas and a military leader and hero of the Texas Revolution. A native of what is now Kentucky, Milam fought beside American interests during the Mexican War of Independence and later joined the Texians in their own fight for independence, for which he assumed a leadership role. Persuading the weary Texians not to back down during the Siege of Béxar, Milam was killed in action while leading an assault into the city that eventually resulted in the Mexican Army's surrender. Milam County, Texas and the town of Milam are named in his honor, as are many other placenames and civic works throughout Texas. The United States census of 2020 was the twenty-fourth decennial United States census. Census Day, the reference day used for the census, was April 1, 2020.
