Mikveh Israel Cemetery (11th And Federal)
The Mikveh Israel Cemetery is a Jewish cemetery known as the Federal Street Burial Ground and located at 11th and Federal Streets in the Passyunk Square neighborhood of South Philadelphia. It was first called Beth Hahayim ( he, בית החיים). It is one of three cemeteries belonging to Congregation Mikveh Israel, Philadelphia's oldest synagogue. History Congregation Mikveh Israel purchased the land for $2,650 from owners William and Catherine Alexander and Joel and Mary Sutherland in what was then the District of Southwark prior to the consolidation of the City of Philadelphia in 1854. The cemetery was deeded to Kahal Kadosh Mikveh Israel on December 30, 1841. The American Legion, and other local veterans and civic groups held Memorial Day observances for veterans at the cemetery in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Benzion Halper
Benzion Halper (April 15, 1884 – March 21, 1924) was a Lithuanian-born Jewish-American Hebraist and Arabist. Life Halper was born on April 15, 1884, in Žasliai, the Vilna Governorate, Russia, the son of Abel Solomon Halper and Miriam Rosenbloom. Halper received a Heder and Yeshiva education, and he began working when he was sixteen. He immigrated to Frankfurt, Germany, to continue his studies in 1901. He left for England shortly afterwards, where he worked as a carpenter, a commercial traveller and in a Manchester factory. In 1904, he matriculated at the University of London and supported himself by teaching privately and writing for the Hebrew weekly ''Hayehudi''. He received an A.B. degree from there in 1904 (with first class honors in Semitics) and an M.A. in 1909 (with mark of distinction). The Mikveh Israel Cemetery Beth-El-Emeth at 55th and Market Streets is a Jewish cemetery in West Philadelphia founded in 1850 and dedicated in 1857 by Isaac Leeser’s Congregation Beth-El-Emeth as Beth-El-Emeth Cemetery ( he, בית אל אמת). Kahal Kadosh Beth-El-Emeth “Holy Congregation of the True God” (or “God of Truth”) was founded in 1857 by Joseph Newhouse as a pulpit for Rev. Isaac Leeser after Leeser left Congregation Mikveh Israel. The congregation followed the "Spanish & Portuguese" rite despite most members hailing from Germany. Mikveh Israel Cemetery is the oldest Jewish cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, giving evidence of a settled community as early as 1740. Dropsie College for Hebrew and Cognate Learning or Dropsie University, at 2321–2335 N Broad St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was America's first degree-granting institution for post-doctoral Jewish studies.
