Mikheil Machavariani
Mikheil Machavariani (born January 9, 1968) is a Georgian politician, former First Deputy Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia, and one of the leaders of The United National Movement opposition party that led widespread protests over the disputed parliamentary elections in Georgia leading to the Rose Revolution in Georgia in November 2003. Machavariani started his political career in 1994. In 1995 he was elected a deputy of the Parliament of Georgia from a group of called "young reformers", together with future President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili and another Georgian politician, Prime Minister of Georgia, Zurab Zhvania. In 2000, Machavariani was appointed Minister for the tax revenues of the Republic of Georgia. He served in this position for 18 months. The Parliament of Georgia ( ka, საქართველოს პარლამენტი, tr) is the supreme national legislature of Georgia. It is a unicameral parliament, currently consisting of 150 members; of these, 120 are proportional representatives and 30 are elected through single-member district plurality system, representing their constituencies. According to the 2017 constitutional amendments, the Parliament will transfer to fully proportional representation in 2024. All members of the Parliament are elected for four years on the basis of universal human suffrage. Rose Revolution
The Rose Revolution or Revolution of Roses ( ka, ვარდების რევოლუცია, tr) was a nonviolent change of power that occurred in Georgia in November 2003. The event was brought about by widespread protests over the disputed parliamentary elections and culminated in the resignation of President Eduard Shevardnadze, which marked the end of the Soviet era leadership in the country. The revolution derives its name from the climactic moment, when demonstrators led by Mikheil Saakashvili stormed the Parliament session with red roses in hand. The revolution was led by Shevardnadze's former political allies, Mikheil Saakashvili, Nino Burjanadze and Zurab Zhvania. Zurab Zhvania ( ka, ზურაბ ჟვანია; 9 December 1963 – 3 February 2005) was a Georgian politician, who served as Prime Minister of Georgia and Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia. Zhvania began his political career at young age, making his first political steps as a member of Green Party, in the beginning of 90s. In 1992 Zhvania was elected chairman of Eastern European Green's and was first Eastern European to serve at the post. In 1993 Zhvania made first serious steps in Georgian politics as he was elected as General Secretary of Citizen's Union.
