Mike Skinner (musician)
Michael Geoffrey Skinner (born 27 November 1979) is an English rapper, singer-songwriter, musician, and record producer. Best known for the music project the Streets, Skinner has also released music as a solo artist, as part of the D.O.T. with frequent collaborator Rob Harvey, and under the pseudonym The Darker the Shadow the Brighter the Light. Early life Skinner was born in Barnet, but grew up in West Heath, Birmingham. He started playing with keyboards at the tender age of five. When he was seven years old he began experiencing symptoms of epilepsy, which worsened in his early teens. He began writing hip hop and garage music in his home in West Heath and later built a sound booth in his bedroom, using a cupboard and a mattress. He describes his background as " Barratt class: suburban estates, not poor but not much money about, really boring". Chipping Barnet
Chipping Barnet or High Barnet is a suburban market town in north London, forming part of the London Borough of Barnet, England. It is a suburban development built around a 12th-century settlement, and is located north-northwest of Charing Cross, east from Borehamwood, west from Enfield and south from Potters Bar. Jahmek Power (born 3 June 1982), better known by his stage name Jammer, is a British grime MC, rapper, songwriter and record producer, known for being a member of Boy Better Know and a former member of N.A.S.T.Y Crew. Jammer also runs Lord of the Mics, a grime clash series released on DVD and well known in grime. Soft Play (formerly known as Slaves) are an English punk rock duo formed in Royal Tunbridge Wells in 2012, consisting of Isaac Holman (lead vocals, drums) and Laurie Vincent (backing vocals, guitar, bass). George Musgrave FRSA is an academic studying the psychological experiences and working conditions of creative careers, with a current focus on mental health and wellbeing in the music industry. He is based at Goldsmiths, University of London and the University of Westminster. Musgrave is also a rapper and performs under the stage-name of Context. The Music are an English alternative rock band, formed in Kippax, Leeds in 1999. Comprising Robert Harvey (vocals, guitar), Adam Nutter (lead guitar), Stuart Coleman (bass) and Phil Jordan (drums), the band came to prominence with the release of their self-titled debut album in 2002. The band released two further studio albums, '' Welcome to the North'' (2004) and ''Strength in Numbers'' (2008), before parting ways in 2011. Career The Music all met at Brigshaw High School (except Phil Jordan, who went to Garforth), and began playing in 1999 as Insense. The Mitchell Brothers were a Ghanaian British rap duo from London, England. They consisted of cousins Owura "Tony" Nyanin from Manor Park and Kofi "Teddy" Hanson from Stockwell. They were the first signing to Mike Skinner's The Beats imprint and are sometimes known as the "geezers with skills". History Tony Nyanin and Teddy Hanson named themselves The Mitchell Brothers after siblings Phil and Grant Mitchell in the British soap ''EastEnders''. As teenagers, they pressed up 1,000 remix CDs called ''Sorted''. Teddy Hanson spotted Mike Skinner from the Streets in their local Barclay's bank in Brixton, South London, soon after Skinner had released his debut album, ''Original Pirate Material''. 679 Artists (formally known as Sixsevenine and 679 Recordings) was a Warner Music Group-owned record label based in London, England. It was started by Nick Worthington who after leaving XL Recordings in 2001, started the company with Warner Music Group, and holds the position of MD and A&R Director. It is named "679" as this was the address of the Pure Groove record shop on Holloway Road. The label's first release was The Streets' debut, ''Original Pirate Material'' (which was named ''The Observer''s best album of the 2000s). The label progressed with subsequent albums from artists including Death From Above 1979, The Futureheads, Kano, King Creosote and Mystery Jets, and also included the million-selling second Streets album, ''A Grand Don't Come for Free''.
