Mike Laffin
Michael Alexander Laffin (January 12, 1918 – May 23, 2019) was a Canadian politician and dentist. He represented the electoral district of Cape Breton Centre in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1963 to 1974, and 1981 to 1988. He was a Progressive Conservative. Career Laffin was first elected in the 1963 provincial election, defeating New Democrat House leader Michael James MacDonald. He was re-elected in the 1967 and 1970 elections. Laffin was defeated when he ran for re-election in 1974, losing his seat to New Democrat James "Buddy" MacEachern. In the 1981 election, Laffin returned to politics and defeated MacEachern to regain the seat. Following the election, he was appointed to the Executive Council of Nova Scotia as Minister of Housing. Laffin was re-elected in 1984, and retained his cabinet seat until a cabinet shuffle in November 1985, when he was appointed Minister of Government Services. New Waterford, Nova Scotia
New Waterford (Irish language: ''Port Lairge Ùr'') is an urban community in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality of Nova Scotia, Canada. Geography Formerly known as Barrachois (from barachois, meaning small port, lagoon or pond), its present name is likely derived from the Irish seaport Waterford, from which many early settlers came. Coal mining in the vicinity began as early as 1854 at Lingan and later at Low Point in 1865. New Waterford is located northeast of Sydney, Nova Scotia. It is located near the ocean and is bordered on one side by cliffs. New Waterford has a rather flat terrain and has several fresh water lakes located nearby. Economy New Waterford is a fishing port and former coal-mining community that has been in economic decline in recent years. There are ongoing efforts to revitalize the area's economy including a slow but steady increase in jobs in the technology sector. Executive Council Of Nova Scotia
The Executive Council of Nova Scotia (informally and more commonly, the Cabinet of Nova Scotia) is the cabinet of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Almost always made up of members of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, the Cabinet is similar in structure and role to the Canadian Cabinet while being smaller in size with different portfolios. The Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, as representative of the King in Right of Nova Scotia, heads the council, and is referred to as the Governor-in-Council. Other members of the Cabinet, who advise, or minister, the viceroy, are selected by the Premier of Nova Scotia and appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor. Most cabinet ministers are the head of a ministry, but this is not always the case.
