Mike Hellawell
Michael Stephen Hellawell (30 June 1938 – 18 July 2023) was an English professional footballer who made 322 appearances in the Football League and played twice for England. Club career Queens Park Rangers The 17-year-old Hellawell signed for Queens Park Rangers in August 1955 from Salts, a small Yorkshire League club from Saltaire, and made his debut in the home match against Exeter City on 25 February 1956. That was his only senior appearance of the season, but in 1956–57 he missed only two matches in all competitions, and was selected to play for the Third Division South representative team against the Northern Section in April 1957. He played 45 games in the Football League for Rangers before being transferred to Birmingham City in 1957 in part-exchange for inside-forward Bill Finney and "a good fee". Keighley
Keighley ( ) is a market town and a civil parish in the City of Bradford Borough of West Yorkshire, England. It is the second largest settlement in the borough, after Bradford. Forwards (also known as attackers) are outfield positions in an association football team who play the furthest up the pitch and are therefore most responsible for scoring goals as well as assisting them. Jimmy Harris (footballer, Born 1933)
James Harris (18 August 1933 – April 2022) was an English professional footballer who played as a centre forward for Everton and Birmingham City in the First Division. The strengths of his game were his pace and a clear eye for goal. Biography Harris made his debut for Everton, replacing Dave Hickson, in 1955 and finished his debut season as the club's top scorer with 21 goals in all competitions. He was also capped for England under-23 that season, scoring in a 3–1 win against Scotland under-23 at Hillsborough in February 1956. When moved to outside right on Hickson's return in 1957 he was able to use his pace and still kept scoring. The following season, 1957–58, he scored a hat-trick away at Tottenham Hotspur only for Everton to lose 10–4. In 1960, having scored 72 goals in 207 appearances in all competitions for Everton, Harris was sold to Birmingham City for a fee of £20,000. Conscription In The United Kingdom
In the United Kingdom, military conscription has existed for two periods in modern times. The first was from 1916 to 1920, and the second from 1939 to 1960. The last conscripted soldiers left the service in 1963. It was legally designated as "Military Service" from 1916 to 1920, and as "National Service" from 1939 to 1960. Harry Hooper (footballer, Born 1933)
Harold Hooper (14 June 1933 – 26 August 2020) was an English footballer who played as an outside forward. He made more than 300 appearances in the Football League, and represented England at under-23 and 'B' international level. Life and career Hooper was born in Pittington, County Durham. He played football for Hylton Colliery Juniors and for the Durham youth side before joining West Ham United in November 1950 when his father, also named Harry Hooper, was appointed assistant trainer at the club. He played for the reserve team in the London Combination before making his debut in the Football League on 3 February 1951, at the age of 17 years 7 months, at home to Barnsley in the Second Division. Penalty Area
The penalty area or 18-yard box (also known less formally as the penalty box or simply box) is an area of an association football pitch. It is rectangular and extends 16.5m (18 yd) to each side of the goal and 16.5m (18 yd) in front of it. Within the penalty area is the penalty spot, which is 11m (12 yd) from the goal line, directly in-line with the centre of the goal. A penalty arc (often informally called "the D") adjoins the penalty area, and encloses the area within 9.15m (10 yd) of the penalty spot. Gordon Astall
Gordon Astall (22 September 1927 – 21 October 2020) was an English professional footballer. He played as an outside right, and represented the Football League, the England B team and the full England side. At club level he made 456 appearances in the Football League and scored 111 goals. Life and career Astall was born in Horwich, near Bolton, Lancashire. He was playing amateur football for Southampton when he signed professional with Plymouth Argyle in November 1947. He had previously been an unsuccessful triallist at his local side Bolton Wanderers. His league debut came in February 1948 at home to Luton Town, and he soon became a regular in the Home Park side, helping Plymouth win the Third Division South title in 1952.
