Mike Gallagher (skier)
Michael Donald Gallagher (October 3, 1941 – October 3, 2013) was an American cross-country skier. He competed in individual and 4×10 km relay events at the 1964, the 1968 and the 1972 Winter Olympics. His relay teams placed 12th–13th, and his best individual achievement was 22nd place over 50 km in 1968. Gallagher was a nine-time U.S. Champion and finished 19th at the 1968 Holmenkollen Ski Festival in the 50 km event. Gallagher was introducing to skiing by his father, a veteran of the 10th Mountain Division, and in 1959 won the U.S. junior cross-country championships. He later attended the University of Colorado, and earned a bachelor's degree from Castleton State College in 1967. At Castleton, besides skiing he competed in cycling and middle-distance running, setting a New England collegiate records over 880 yards, one mile and 2-miles. Cross-country Skiing (sport)
Competitive cross-country skiing encompasses a variety of race formats and course lengths. Rules of cross-country skiing are sanctioned by the International Ski Federation and by various national organizations. International competitions include the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, the FIS Cross-Country World Cup, and at the Winter Olympic Games. Such races occur over homologated, groomed courses designed to support classic (in-track) and freestyle events, where the skiers may employ skate skiing. It also encompasses cross-country ski marathon events, sanctioned by the Worldloppet Ski Federation, and cross-country ski orienteering events, sanctioned by the International Orienteering Federation. Vermont Ski And Snowboard Museum
The Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum is a winter sports museum in Vermont. It was founded in 1988 in Brandon, Vermont as The Vermont Ski Museum. In 2000, the museum moved to Stowe and opened to the public at its current location in 2002. In 2011, the word snowboarding was added to the museum's name. Currently, the museum changes exhibits annually, except the Hall of Fame. The museum's main objective is to "collect, preserve, and celebrate Vermont's skiing and snowboarding history." Mount Washington Road Race
The Mount Washington Road Race is a road running event that follows the auto road going from the base of Mount Washington in New Hampshire nearly to the mountain's summit (located at above sea level). The race was first held in 1936, and has been run annually since 1966. Women first participated officially in 1972. The race course rises feet from start to finish. It is a steep mountain course with an average grade of 12%, all uphill after the first few hundred yards. Held in June each year, Mount Washington is a popular race for runners in New England, and also attracts many runners from other parts of the United States and the world. For non-elite runners, entry is by lottery. The lottery winners are able to be among the approximately 1,100 runners who partake in this annual event.
