The Georgia State Senate is the upper house of the Georgia General Assembly, in the U.S. state of Georgia. Legal provisions The Georgia State Senate is the upper house of the Georgia General Assembly, with the lower house being the Georgia House of Representatives. Both bodies are constitutionally required to convene annually at the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta. The General Assembly begins each yearly session on the second Monday in January. From that date of convention, sessions last for 40 legislative days. The General Assembly may call for special sessions by a three-fifths vote of the members in each chamber. William Stone Cowsert (born September 1, 1958) is an American politician from the state of Georgia. A member of the Republican Party, Cowsert serves in the Georgia State Senate, representing the 46th district. Early life and education Cowsert was born September 1, 1958, in Jackson, Mississippi. He was raised in Macon, Georgia, and graduated from Macon Central High School. Cowsert subsequently earned a B.S. degree in business administration from Presbyterian College, and a J.D. degree from the University of Georgia School of Law. After passing the bar, Cowsert founded the Athens law firm of Cowsert & Avery. William "Bill" Grady Hamrick III (born October 6, 1964) is the Georgia Statewide Business Court Judge. Judge Hamrick was appointed by Governor Brian Kemp on August 3, 2022 and confirmed by the Georgia Legislature on September 14, 2022 to be the Statewide Business Court Judge of Georgia and was sworn in on September 26, 2022. Hamrick replaced Judge Walt Davis. Prior to becoming the Business Court Judge, Judge Hamrick was a Superior Court Judge in the Coweta Circuit. He was appointed by Governor Nathan Deal and took office on September 3, 2012 to fill the seat vacated when Judge William F. Lee retired. Carrollton, Georgia is a city in the northwest region of Georgia, about 45 miles (72 km) west of Atlanta near the Alabama state line. It is the county seat of Carroll County, which is included in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. Historically, Carrollton has been a commercial center for several mostly rural counties in both Georgia and Alabama. It is the home of the University of West Georgia and West Georgia Technical College. It is a rural area with a large farming community. The University of West Georgia is a public university in Carrollton, Georgia. The university offers a satellite campus in Newnan, Georgia, select classes at its Douglasville Center, and off-campus Museum Studies classes at the Atlanta History Center in Atlanta, Georgia.
