Michael Balfour (historian)
Michael Leonard Graham Balfour (22 November 1908 — 16 September 1995) was an English historian and civil servant. He was born in Oxford, the son of Sir Graham Balfour. He was educated at Rugby School and Balliol College, Oxford, where he graduated with a first in history. He first visited Germany in 1930, where he became a friend of Helmuth James von Moltke. During the Second World War Balfour worked at the Ministry of Information and the Political Intelligence Department of the Foreign Office (the cover name for the Political Warfare Executive). In 1944 he joined the Psychological Warfare Division of the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force and after the war he became Director of Public Relations and Information Services, Control Commission, in the British Zone of Allied-occupied Germany. Michael Balfour, 1st Lord Balfour of Burleigh PC (died 15 March 1619) was a Scottish peer. Balfour was the eldest son of Sir James Balfour, Lord Pittendreich, President of the Court of Session, and his wife Margaret Balfour, daughter of Michael Balfour of Burleigh. James Balfour, 1st Baron Balfour of Glenawley, was his younger brother. His residence was Burleigh Castle near Kinross. He was knighted at the opening of Parliament in 1592. Balfour Baronets
There have been three baronetcies created for members of Clan Balfour, one in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia and two in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. One is extant and a subsidiary title of Baron Riverdale. The Balfour Baronetcy, of Denmiln and Kinnaird in the County of Fife, was created in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia on 22 December 1633 for James Balfour of Denmylne. He was Lord Lyon King of Arms from 1630 to 1654. The line of the first Baronet failed on the early death of his son, the second Baronet, in 1673. The late Baronet was succeeded by his uncle, the third Baronet. The title then descended from father to son until the death of the latter's great-great-grandson, the seventh Baronet, in 1773. He was succeeded by his younger brother, the eighth Baronet. When he died in 1793 the baronetcy became dormant. Michael Creighton Balfour (11 February 1918 – 24 October 1997) was an English actor, working mainly in British films and TV, following his TV debut in the BBC's ''The Marvellous History of St Bernard'', in 1938.
