Midnight Racer
''280 ZZZAP'' is a racing arcade video game designed by Jamie Fenton for Dave Nutting Associates. Based on Nissan's Datsun 280Z, it is one of the earliest games with authorized branding. Gameplay Players can drive up to while navigating a tricky road course at night. Players must watch out for treacherous turns, nasty competitors, and the ever-present time limit. Release Midway demonstrated the game under the name ''Midnight Racer'' at the AMOA show in November 1976. It drew comparisons to ''Night Driver'', demonstrated at the same show by Atari, Inc.. Both games are derived from the earlier German night driving video game ''Nürburgring 1'' demonstrated at the German IMA show in Spring 1976. Before release in February 1977, the game was re-branded ''280 ZZZAP'' after the US advertising campaign for Nissan's Datsun 280Z. Dave Nutting Associates
David Judd Nutting (December 26, 1930 – September 23, 2020) was an industrial design engineer who played a role in the early video game industry. He was a graduate of the Pratt Institute with a degree in industrial design. Career After leaving the Army Corps of Engineers, Nutting joined the design firm of Brooks Stevens Associates. During his time there he was involved in a wide variety of projects, working on everything from Evinrude Outboard Motors, Mirro cookware, Bolens tractors, Studebaker, and 3M. For Willys, Nutting designed Jeep Grand Wagoneer, and went on to design the Enstrom Helicopter. In 1967 Dave Nutting became involved in the coin-operated games industry through his operation Nutting Industries selling the ''I.Q. ''Nürburgring 1'' is an arcade game developed by Dr. Reiner Foerst and released in 1976. It was first demonstrated at the German IMA show in Spring 1976. It is recognized as the world's earliest first-person racing video game and inspired the development of '' Night Driver''. Gameplay The game's arcade cabinet contained a steering wheel, shifter, pedals, and other controls in the form of buttons. The player drove along a twisting roadway bordered by white guardrails. The lower portion of the screen showed the speedometer, mileage and other indicators. The game counted crashes and punished them with a time penalty. The game ended after 90 seconds, or by driving across the finish line. Datsun Vehicles
Datsun (, ) was an automobile brand owned by Nissan. Datsun's original production run began in 1931. From 1958 to 1986, only vehicles exported by Nissan were identified as Datsun. Nissan phased out the Datsun brand in March 1986, but relaunched it in June 2013 as the brand for low-cost vehicles manufactured for emerging markets. Nissan considered phasing out the Datsun brand for a second time in 2019 and 2020, eventually discontinuing the struggling brand in April 2022. In 1931, DAT Motorcar Co. chose to name its new small car "Datson", a name which indicated the new car's smaller size when compared to the DAT's larger vehicle already in production. An advergame is a form of advertising in video games, in which the video game is developed by or in close collaboration with a corporate entity for purposes of advertising a brand-name product. While other video games may use in-game advertising (such as an advertisement on a virtual billboard or branding on an in-game object), an advergame is differentiated by the Interactive Advertising Bureau as a "game specifically designed around [the] product or service being advertised".
