Midnight Alibi
''Midnight Alibi'' is a 1934 pre-Code crime comedy-drama directed by Alan Crosland, produced by First National Pictures, distributed by Warner Bros. and starring Richard Barthelmess. Midnight Alibi is an adaptation of Damon Runyon's 1933 short story ''The Old Doll's House''. Barthelmess plays a gangster who returns to New York after some time in Europe and falls in love with Joan (Dvorak), unaware that she's the younger sister of his bitter rival, Angie the Ox (Barrat). After an attempted hit on him, he seeks refuge in the home of an old lady (Lowell), who tells him of her own romance many years ago with a man who looked just like him (also Barthelmess; Chandler plays her in the flashback). Their friendship will prove useful later when he's accused of murder. This was Barthelmess' last film for First National after a 15-year run at the studio. Alan Crosland
Alan Crosland (August 10, 1894 – July 16, 1936) was an American stage actor and film director. He is noted for having directed the first feature film using spoken dialogue, ''The Jazz Singer'' (1927). Early life and career Born in New York City, New York to a well-to-do Jewish family, Crosland attended Dartmouth College. After graduation, he took a job as a writer with the ''New York Globe'' magazine. Interested in the theatre, he began acting on stage, appearing in several productions with Shakespearian actress Annie Russell. Crosland began his career in the motion picture industry in 1912 at Edison Studios in The Bronx, New York, where he worked at various jobs for two years until he had learned the business sufficiently well to begin directing short films. By 1917, he was directing feature-length films and in 1920 directed Olive Thomas in ''The Flapper'', one of her final films before her death in September of that year. Robert Barrat
Robert Harriot Barrat (July 10, 1891 – January 7, 1970) was an American stage, motion picture, and television character actor. Early years Barratt was born on July 10, 1891, in New York City and was educated in the public schools there. He left college and home during his sophomore year, traveling on a tramp steamer to Central America, England, France, and South America. After he returned to the United States, he worked for two years on his brother's farm near Springfield, Massachusetts, until he learned of an opening in the chorus for a musical comedy. Career Early in his career, Barrat traveled around the United States, sometimes acting with stock theater companies and sometimes performing in vaudeville on the Keith and Orpheum circuits. Vincent Sherman (born Abraham Orovitz, July 16, 1906 – June 18, 2006) was an American director and actor who worked in Hollywood. His movies include '' Mr. Skeffington'' (1944), '' Nora Prentiss'' (1947), and ''The Young Philadelphians'' (1959). He began his career as an actor on Broadway and later in film. Arthur Aylesworth
Arthur Preston Aylesworth (August 12, 1883 – June 26, 1946) was an American stage and film actor. Early years Aylesworth was born in Apponaug, Rhode Island, to a military family; his father and his grandfather graduated from the United States Military Academy. Aylesworth himself attended the academy for two years. Career Aylesworth's Broadway debut came in ''Over Night'' (1911). His other Broadway appearances included the musical ''Follow Thru'' (1929), and his last show there was ''Yankee Point'' (1942). He was on the stage for over a quarter of a century and acted in many productions. In the 1930s, he became a contract player at Warner Brothers working in character actors, often uncredited. Aylesworth played in over 130 films almost exclusively from the early 1930s onwards. His grave is located at Chapel of the Pines Crematory in Los Angeles. Paul Hurst (actor)
Paul Causey Hurst (October 15, 1888 – February 27, 1953) was an American actor and director. Career Born in Traver, California, Hurst was half-Cherokee and half-Seneca. He was raised on a ranch. He appeared in hundreds of films during the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s. However, he got his start painting scenery as part of the backstage crew during the silent movie era. By 1911, he was active in films as an actor, writer and director. He freelanced and worked for many of the movie studios, building a solid reputation for his work both on and off screen. Hurst is best remembered for two roles: as the Yankee deserter who trespasses at Tara and is shot by Scarlett in ''Gone with the Wind'' (1939); and his memorable characterization of the drunken and sadistic vigilante Smith in ''The Ox Bow Incident'' (1943).
