Middletown, Staten Island
Middletown was a town in Richmond County, New York. It was incorporated in 1860 from parts of Southfield and Castleton. At the time, it included the most populous part of the village of Edgewater and the hilly ridges of the interior, Grymes Hill and Todt Hill among others. It was dissolved in 1898 upon consolidation into the City of New York. Southfield, New York
Southfield was a Town in Richmond County, New York. It was located in the southeastern part of Staten Island, along Lower New York Bay prior to the incorporation of Staten Island into New York City in 1898, bounded on the west roughly by Richmond Road, Giffords Lane, Amboy Road, and Arden Avenue. The town's origins dates to an administrative division of the island made by English colonists in the late 17th century, after they took over New Netherland from the Dutch in 1664. The town was incorporated as one of the four original divisions of Richmond County in 1788. In 1860, Middletown was created from parts of Southfield and Castleton. Castleton, Staten Island
Castleton is a former town in the U.S. state of New York. It was located in the northeastern part of Staten Island prior to the incorporation of Staten Island into New York City in 1898. It had a total area of 3880 acres (15.7 km²) and was bounded by Upper New York Bay on the east and the Kill Van Kull on the north. The town dates from the late 17th century. It was originally set aside as the manor of the governor of the Province of New York and takes its name from the manor of Governor Thomas Dongan who named it for his home Castletown, in the town Kildrought (now Celbridge) in County Kildare, Ireland. The original manor house was constructed along Richmond Terrace, between Dongan Street and Bodin Street. It was destroyed by fire on December 25, 1878. Grymes Hill
Grymes Hill is a tall hill formed of serpentine rock on Staten Island, New York. It is the second highest natural point on the island and in the five boroughs of New York City. The neighborhood of the same name encompasses an area of and has a population of 8,263 people. The hill also includes parts of the Silver Lake neighborhood. The area includes part of ZIP Codes 10301 and 10304. Etymology The hill is named after Suzette Grymes, wife of prominent New Orleans lawyer and member of the First Families of Virginia, John Randolph Grymes. Todt Hill
Todt Hill ( ) is a hill formed of serpentine rock on Staten Island, New York. It is the highest natural point in the five boroughs of New York City and the highest elevation on the entire Atlantic coastal plain from Florida to Cape Cod. The summit of the ridge is largely covered in woodlands as part of the Staten Island Greenbelt, although much of the surrounding area is developed and residential. It is considered one of the most exclusive and most expensive areas of Staten Island. History The name Todt comes from the German word "Tod" for "dead" and may refer to the cemetery (the present Moravian Cemetery, opened in 1740 and now the island's largest cemetery) on the southwestern foot of the ridge near the town of New Dorp that has been in use since colonial days. The City of Greater New York was the term used by many politicians and scholars for the expanded City of New York created on January 1, 1898, by consolidating the existing City of New York with Brooklyn, western Queens County, and Staten Island. The section of the Bronx west of the Bronx River had been annexed to the City and County of New York in 1874 and was known as the Annexed District. The section of the Bronx east of the Bronx River had been annexed to New York City, and New York County, in 1895. In the years leading up to consolidation, the City of Brooklyn had expanded by annexing all of the other towns and cities in Kings County.
