Middleton Onslow
Middleton Onslow (17 April 1732 – 1801) was an English landowner, who briefly who sat in the House of Commons in 1774 and 1775 on behalf of the senior branch of his family. Early life The elder son of Denzil Onslow and his wife Anne, he belonged to the Onslows of Drungewick, Sussex, a junior branch of the Surrey political family. Through his father, he was third cousin to George Onslow, later the Earl of Onslow. Political career Middleton was put into Parliament for Rye at the 1774 election to hold the seat until George's son Tom should come of age to take the seat. No political activity on Middleton's part is recorded, and on 20 April 1775, he took the Manor of East Hendred to leave the seat and allow it to pass to Tom. House Of Commons
The House of Commons is the name for the elected lower house of the bicameral parliaments of the United Kingdom and Canada. In both of these countries, the Commons holds much more legislative power than the nominally upper house of parliament. 4th Queen's Own Hussars
The 4th Queen's Own Hussars was a cavalry regiment in the British Army, first raised in 1685. It saw service for three centuries, including the First World War and the Second World War. It amalgamated with the 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars, to form the Queen's Royal Irish Hussars in 1958. History Formation and early history The regiment was first raised by the Hon. John Berkeley as The Princess Anne of Denmark's Regiment of Dragoons in 1685, as part of the response to the Monmouth Rebellion by the regimenting of various independent troops, and ranked as the 4th Dragoons. Rose Fuller
Rose Fuller FRS (12 April 1708 – 7 May 1777) was a West Indies plantation owner and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1756 to 1777. Early life Fuller was the second son of John Fuller FRS, of Brightling, Sussex, and his wife Elizabeth Rose, daughter of Fulke Rose of Jamaica. His elder brother was the MP John Fuller Jr. He studied medicine at Cambridge University and was also a student at Leyden in the Netherlands. He graduated MD and became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1732. Fuller went to Jamaica before 1735, where he took over the family plantation from his father. He was elected to the Assembly in 1735 and called to the council in 1737. He was made a judge of the supreme courts but as a result of disputes with the governor Edward Trelawny he was removed from the council and the bench and returned to England in 1749. Denzil Onslow (British Army Officer)
General Denzil Onslow (12 September 1770 – 21 August 1838) was a British soldier. He was born at Marylebone, London, the son of the British Member of Parliament Middleton Onslow. Military career He was commissioned as an ensign in the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards in 1787 and was promoted to lieutenant in 1793, with the rank of captain in the Army. In 1794 he purchased the rank of major in the 19th Regiment of Foot, and later that year was appointed lieutenant-colonel of Sir James Grant's newly-raised 97th Regiment of Foot. The regiment was disbanded the following year, so he was on half-pay when granted the brevet rank of colonel in 1800. He was thereafter promoted by seniority to major-general in 1805, lieutenant-general in 1811, and general in 1825. Denzil Onslow (of Stoughton)
Denzil Onslow of Stoughton ( – 15 November 1765) of Mickleham, Surrey was a British politician. A member of the influential Onslow family of Surrey, he held a number of lucrative Government posts, and died owing a relatively large sum to the Treasury through mismanagement of his accounts. Personal life He was the son of Richard Onslow (d. 1719) and Sarah Manning, and grandson of Sir Henry Onslow, of Drungewick, who was a younger son of Sir Richard Onslow. His mother was Sarah, daughter of Thomas Calvert. List Of Stewards Of The Manor Of East Hendred
This is a list of the Members of Parliament appointed as Steward of the Manor of East Hendred, a notional 'office of profit under the crown' which was used to resign from the House of Commons. Appointment of an MP to the office was first made in 1763. The Manor of East Hendred was sold by the Crown in 1823, but through oversight, appointments to the post of Steward continued until 1840, after which it was discontinued for Parliamentary purposes in favour of other stewardships. The last steward died in 1851. Stewards Dates given are of the writ to replace the member who accepted the stewardship.
