Middlefork Township is a township in Vermilion County, Illinois, USA. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,458 and it contained 628 housing units. History Middlefork Township was one of the eight townships created in 1851 and included all the land that later became Butler and Ford townships. The first settlers in the township were Samuel Partlow and his wife and four sons, who arrived from Kentucky in 1829. A harsh winter caused the loss of all their cattle, and there was little game available for food; Samuel died that year and the family returned to Kentucky. However, the next year, they came back again. Geography According to the 2010 census, the township has a total area of , of which (or 99.97%) is land and (or 0.03%) is water. Armstrong, Illinois
Armstrong is an unincorporated community in Middlefork Township, Vermilion County, Illinois. History Armstrong was laid out in 1876 on land owned by Thomas and Henry Armstrong; it was on the route of the Havana, Rantoul, and Eastern narrow-gauge railroad (which later became the Illinois Central Railroad). On October 2, 1908, a fire destroyed many important buildings in Armstrong, including the general store, the harness shop, the blacksmith shop, the lumber yard, the opera house, the post office, and the grain elevator. Water was pumped by hand by residents to try to fight the fire, and water was also brought by rail from over a mile away; the town had no fire equipment. U.S. Route 136 is an east-west U.S. highway that is a spur route of U.S. Route 36. It runs from Edison, Nebraska, at U.S. Route 6 and U.S. Route 34 to the Interstate 74/Interstate 465 interchange in Speedway, Indiana. This is a distance of . History Kerr Township changed its name from Middlefork Township on April 30, 1860. Geography Kerr is Township 22 North, Range 11 East of the Third Principal Meridian and part of Range 14 West of the Second Principal Meridian. When the federal township land surveys were done in 1821 one group of surveyors went west from the Second Principal Meridian and another went east from the Third Principal Meridian. Potomac () is a village in Vermilion County, Illinois, United States. It is part of the Danville, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 750 at the 2010 census. History The town was originally named Marysville after the wives of the two founders, John Smith and Isaac Meneley, who started businesses here ''circa'' 1840. On May 13, 1871, a post office was established at the town and was named Potomac, most likely after the Potomac River. The town's name was later changed to conform to this. The town was hit by a tornado in April 1953, injuring a dozen people. Potomac prospered into the late 20th century, with a population peaking at 900 during the 1970 census, due in part to its location along US Route 136, one of the primary East-West highways crossing the state of Illinois.
