Middlebury station is an Amtrak train station in Middlebury, Vermont. The station opened on July 29, 2022 when the ''Ethan Allen Express'' was extended from Rutland (city), Vermont, Rutland to Burlington, Vermont, Burlington. History Middlebury's historic train station closed in 1953 when the Rutland Railroad discontinued passenger service to the town. The building is now private property and houses retail space. Since 2014, Vermont Translines has run intercity motorcoach service from Albany, New York, Albany to Burlington up the U.S. Route 7 in Vermont, U.S. Route 7 corridor through Middlebury. Middlebury is the shire town (county seat) of Addison County, Vermont, United States. As of the 2020 U.S. Census, the population was 9,152. Middlebury is home to Middlebury College and the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History. History One of the New Hampshire Grants, Middlebury was chartered by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth on November 2, 1761. The name "Middlebury" came from its location between the towns of Salisbury and New Haven. It was awarded to John Evarts and 62 others. Otter Creek is the longest river entirely contained within the borders of Vermont. Roughly long, it is the primary watercourse running through Rutland County and Addison County. Double-stack rail transport is a form of intermodal freight transport in which railroad cars carry two layers of intermodal containers. Invented in the United States in 1984, it is now being used for nearly seventy percent of United States intermodal shipments. Operation Lifesaver is the largest rail safety organization in the United States. It was founded by the Union Pacific Railroad in the early 1970s. History In 1972, the Idaho State Highway Patrol, then-Governor Cecil Andrus and the Union Pacific Railroad mounted campaign to promote "Stop, Look and Listen" safety at highway-rail grade crossings.
