Braddan
Braddan ( gv, Braddan) is one of the seventeen parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) in the sheading of Middle. Administratively, a small part of the historic parish of Braddan is now covered by part of the borough of Douglas, the capital and largest town of the Isle of Man. Other settlements in the parish include Port Soderick, Strang, Tromode and Union Mills. Local government For the purposes of local government, the ''majority'' of the historic parish forms a single parish district with five elected Commissioners: In 1896, a small area in the south-east of the historic parish of Braddan became part of the borough of Douglas, since when it has been governed by a municipal corporation with 18 councillors and an elected mayor. Marown
Marown ( , rhymes with "gown"; gv, Marooney) is one of the seventeen historic parishes of the Isle of Man. It is the only landlocked parish on the Island. It is located in the centre of the island, in the sheading of Middle, though historically, from 1796 until 1986, it was in the sheading of Glenfaba. Settlements in the parish include Braaid, Crosby and Glen Vine. Local government For the purposes of local government, the whole of the historic parish forms a single parish district with Commissioners. Although Marown lies east of the watershed and is currently in the sheading of Middle, it is also grouped for various local government purposes with the west of the island: it falls under the aegis of the Peel and Western District Housing Committee, Western Traffic Management Group, Western Neighbourhood Policing etc. The Captain of the Parish (since 2001) is Charles Fargher MBE. The Nunnery, Douglas
The Nunnery is an estate outside of Douglas on the Isle of Man, named after a religious foundation on the site, at . The Nunnery is located on Old Castletown Road, Braddan. In 1999, the estate was acquired for the Isle of Man International Business School, now part of the University College Isle of Man. History Monastic era The Priory of Douglas was a monastery of nuns, possibly dating to the reign of Rǫgnvaldr Guðrøðarson, King of the Isles (1187-1226). King Robert Bruce spent the night at the nunnery on Sunday, May 22, 1313 prior to beginning his siege of Rushen Castle the next day. He took the castle three weeks later. The nunnery was suppressed by King Henry VIII in 1540. Nothing remains of the monastery. In 1610, the Nunnery was granted to the Earl of Derby by King James. Post Dissolution The buildings were acquired by Richard Calcot, Comptroller of the Isle of Man, who is said to have married the last Prioress, Margaret Goodman.
