Microtransat Challenge
The Microtransat Challenge is a competition to design and build a sailboat under 2.4 meters in length capable of crossing the Atlantic Ocean without human interaction. There are two classes, sailing and non-sailing, and two divisions, autonomous, which does not allow any human interaction with the boat, and uncrewed, which allows any data including a change of course to be sent to the boat. The challenge was originally conceived in 2005 by Mark Neal of Aberystwyth University and Yves Briere of ISAE. The first attempt was made on September 11, 2010, by Pinta from Aberystwyth University. According to the organizers, the goal of the challenge is to contribute to ocean-monitoring platforms, as well as provide a learning opportunity. Atlantic Ocean
The Atlantic Ocean is the second-largest of the world's five oceans, with an area of about . It covers approximately 20% of Earth's surface and about 29% of its water surface area. It is known to separate the " Old World" of Africa, Europe and Asia from the "New World" of the Americas in the European perception of the World. The Atlantic Ocean occupies an elongated, S-shaped basin extending longitudinally between Europe and Africa to the east, and North and South America to the west. Unmanned Surface Vehicle
Unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), also known as unmanned surface vessels, autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) in some cases, uncrewed surface vessels (USVs), or colloquially drone ships, or robot boats, are boats or ships that operate on the surface of the water without a crew. USVs operate with various levels of autonomy, from remote control to fully autonomous. Some commercial USVs may utilize COLREGs-compliant navigation.
