Xbox Game Studios (formerly Microsoft Games, Microsoft Game Studios and Microsoft Studios) is an American video game publisher that acts as a division of technology company Microsoft. The division was created in March 2000 and replaced Microsoft's internal Games Group. ''Microsoft Arcade'' is a series of classic arcade game compilations released by Microsoft between 1993 and 2000. Although the games included in these compilations were very similar to the original arcade games in both appearance and gameplay, they were newly written versions, not ports of the original arcade game code; these versions of the games were programmed specifically for Windows, with each game running in a small window (or in a large window with a border). Each game allowed certain customizations not available in the original arcade game, ''i.e.'' the number of lives and bonus levels. Access Software
Access Software, Inc. was an American video game developer based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Founded in November 1982 by Bruce Carver and Chris Jones, the company created the '' Beach Head'', '' Links'' and ''Tex Murphy'' series, as well as '' Raid over Moscow''. Access Software was acquired by Microsoft in April 1999, transitioning in name twice before being acquired by Take-Two Interactive in October 2004, receiving the name Indie Built. In January 2005, Access Software became part of Take-Two's 2K label. Following a poor financial performance at Take-Two, Indie Built was closed down in May 2006. TruGolf, a company that develops indoor golf simulators, was formerly a subsidiary of Access Software based on the display technology they had made for the ''Links'' games and spun out to its own company during the Microsoft acquisition. ''JezzBall'' is a video game originally published for Microsoft Windows in 1992. The player must capture parts of a rectangular space by dividing it with horizontal or vertical lines. While each line is being drawn it must not be touched by bouncing balls. ''JezzBall'' has similarities with ''Qix'', a 1981 arcade game. History JezzBall was programmed by Dima Pavlovsky. There were four Entertainment Packs released between 1990 and 1992. These games were somewhat unusual for the time, in that they would not run under MS-DOS. In 1994, a compilation of the previous four ''Entertainment Packs'' were released called ''The Best of Microsoft Entertainment Pack''. A Game Boy Color version was released in 2000. Microsoft advertised Entertainment Packs for casual gaming on office computers. The boxes had slogans like "No more boring coffee breaks" and "Only a few minutes between meetings? ''Pipe Mania'' is a puzzle video game developed by The Assembly Line for the Amiga and published in 1989. It was ported to several other platforms by Lucasfilm Games as ''Pipe Dream''; the company distributed the game in the US. The player must connect randomly appearing pieces of pipe on a grid to a given length within a limited time. The Windows version of the game was included in the '' MS Windows Entertainment Pack''. In 1990, it was released as an arcade game by Japanese manufacturer Video System Co. Ltd., though with slightly altered gameplay, giving the player the task to connect a source and drain with the random pipe pieces. Long after its initial release, the ''Pipe Mania'' concept re-emerged as a minigame representing hacking or security system bypassing in larger video games. ''Nibbles'', also known by the source code's file name ''NIBBLES.BAS'', is a variant of the snake video game concept used to demonstrate the QBasic programming language. ''Nibbles'' was written in QBasic by Rick Raddatz, who later went on to create small businesses such as Xiosoft and Bizpad. Gameplay The game's objective is to navigate a virtual snake through a walled space while consuming numbers (from 1 through 9) along the way. The player must avoid colliding with walls, other snakes or their own snake. Since the length of the snake increases with each number consumed, the game increases in difficulty over time. After the last number has been eaten, the player progresses to the next level, with more complex obstacles and increased speed. There is a multiplayer mode which allows a second player to control a second snake by using a different set of keys on the same keyboard. MS-DOS ( ; acronym for Microsoft Disk Operating System, also known as Microsoft DOS) is an operating system for x86-based personal computers mostly developed by Microsoft. Gorillas (video Game)
''Gorillas'', also known under the source code's file name ''GORILLA.BAS'', is a video game first distributed with MS-DOS 5 and published in 1991 by Microsoft. It is a turn-based artillery game. With allusions to King Kong, the game consists of two gorillas throwing explosive bananas at each other above a city skyline. The players can adjust the angle and velocity of each throw as well as the gravitational pull of the planet. Written in QBasic, it is one of the programs included as a demonstration of that programming language. The others are '' Nibbles'' (another game), ''Money'' (a simple financial calculator), and ''REMLINE'' (a program to remove line numbers from old BASIC programs). QB64 version QB64 included a copy of ''Gorillas'', adapted to be run at proper speed, until it was removed due to copyright concerns.
