Microscope Gallery
Microscope Gallery is a contemporary art gallery located at 525 West 29th Street, New York, NY 10001. It was founded by artists and curators Elle Burchill and Andrea Monti and opened in September 2010 in Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY. The gallery specializes in time-based works, particularly film, sound, digital and performance art. Sculpture, installation, painting, mixed media and photographic works are also regularly shown at Microscope. Some of the artists whose work has been exhibited at Microscope include Anthology Film Archives founder Jonas Mekas, Fluxus founding member George Maciunas, Nick Zedd, Michael Snow, Barbara Hammer, Amos Poe, Ken Jacobs, Su Friedrich, and Lary 7. Bushwick, Brooklyn
Bushwick is a neighborhood in the northern part of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. It is bounded by the neighborhood of Ridgewood, Queens, to the northeast; Williamsburg to the northwest; East New York and the cemeteries of Highland Park to the southeast; Brownsville to the south; and Bedford–Stuyvesant to the southwest. The town was first founded by the Dutch during the Dutch colonization of the Americas in the 17th century. In the 19th century, the neighborhood became a community of German immigrants and their descendants. The 20th century saw an influx of Italian immigrants and Italian-Americans up to the 1980s. By the late 20th century, the neighborhood became predominantly Hispanic as another wave of immigrants arrived. Su Friedrich
Su Friedrich (born December 12, 1954) is an American avant-garde film director, producer, writer, and cinematographer. Early life Su Friedrich was born in 1954 in New Haven, Connecticut. Her mother was German and came to the US with Friedrich's father, Paul Friedrich who was working in Germany as a GI at the time. Friedrich attended the University of Chicago (1971–72) and Oberlin College (1972–1975) from which she earned a B.A. in Art and Art History. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY, and is a Professor in the Center for the Creative and Performing Arts at Princeton University, where she has taught film and video production since 1998. Marni Kotak
Marni Kotak (born 1974) is an American artist best known for her durational performance/exhibition ''The Birth of Baby X,'' in which she gave birth to her son Baby X (aka Baby Ajax) as a live performance at Microscope Gallery in Brooklyn, NY, USA, on October 25, 2011. Education Kotak received her BA from Bard College and her MFA from Brooklyn College in 2006, where she was one of 18 graduating artists whose thesis exhibit was shut down and censored by NYC officials. Yasue Maetake
Yasue Maetake (born 1973 in Tokyo, Japan) is a New York City-based sculptor. Takahiko Iimura
was a Japanese avant-garde filmmaker and fine artist. He is considered one of the pioneers of experimental and independent filmmaking in Japan. Bradley Eros
Bradley Eros (born in 1952 in Fairfield, Illinois) is an experimental film director, actor, curator, poet, and performance artist who also makes Musique concrète sound collages, music videos, photographs, live projection performances, works on paper and art objects. His work has been presented in multiple screenings and exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, including the 2004 Whitney Biennial, and is in the permanent collection of the museum. Peggy Ahwesh (born 1954 in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania) is an American experimental filmmaker and video artist. She received her B.F.A. at Antioch College. A bricoleur who has created both narrative works and documentaries, some projects are scripted and others incorporate improvised performance. She makes use of sync sound, found footage, digital animation, and Pixelvision video. Her work is primarily an investigation of cultural identity and the role of the subject in various genres. Her interests include genre; women, sexuality and feminism; reenactment; and artists' books.
