Bill Waddington
William Joseph Waddington (10 June 1916 – 9 September 2000) was an English actor, comedian and co-author who was born in Oldham, Lancashire. In later life he achieved stardom as the pompous ex-serviceman Percy Sugden in Granada Television's long-running soap opera ''Coronation Street''. Biography Waddington was born on Saturday 10 June 1916 in Oldham, Lancashire. His parents William and Epsie ran the Clarence Hotel, a public house in Oldham. He was the couple's fourth child, having lost twins the year before. Waddington, and his sister Connie, were brought up by family friends as their father fought in the First World War, and their mother worked all hours to keep the children fed. The family moved house frequently and Waddington attended many different schools in Oldham. Braithwell is a village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England. It is about north from Maltby and south-east from Conisbrough. According to the 2001 Census the civil parish had a population of 1,056, increasing slightly to 1,060 at the 2011 Census. In 1289, the village obtained a Royal Charter entitling it to hold a weekly Tuesday market and an annual eight-day fair – an unusually long duration. These were long discontinued by a survey of 1652, but a cross shaft survives with an inscription in Norman French which translates as "Jesus, son of Mary, think upon the brother of our king, I beseech you". The Church of St James in the village is a Grade II* listed building. Doncaster (, ) is a city in South Yorkshire, England. Named after the River Don, it is the administrative centre of the larger City of Doncaster. Percy Sugden is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera ''Coronation Street'', played by Bill Waddington. He appeared between 1983 and 1997.
