Mick Lynch (musician)
Mick Lynch (11 October 1959 – 17 December 2015) was an Irish musician, best known for his work in the Irish-English band Stump. Lynch was the son of Tadhg and Noreen Lynch and was one of five siblings. He was born in Limerick and grew up in Cork. Stump were popular among the indie scene and the British music press in the 1980s and early 1990s. John Peel was a fan of their music. Stump was led by Lynch and influenced by Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart and others. Lynch was especially popular for his lyrics. Stump - with Lynch as one of their main actors - released a mini-album in 1986, titled '' Quirk Out''. Two years later, they released their only proper full-length album ''A Fierce Pancake''. Stump (band)
Stump were an Irish-English indie/experimental/rock group consisting of Mick Lynch (musician), Mick Lynch (vocals), Rob McKahey (drums), Kev Hopper (bass) and Chris Salmon (guitar). Their music has been described as a mixture of Captain Beefheart and The Fall (band), The Fall, and they are best known for their influential, critically acclaimed, but poor selling 1988 album, ''A Fierce Pancake''. Early years Their first release was a four track EP ''Mud on a Colon'' issued in 1986 through the Ron Johnson Records, Ron Johnson record label. Cork (city)
Cork ( , from , meaning 'marsh') is the second largest city in Ireland and third largest city by population on the island of Ireland. It is located in the south-west of Ireland, in the province of Munster. Following an extension to the city's boundary in 2019, its population is over 222,000. John Peel
John Robert Parker Ravenscroft (30 August 1939 – 25 October 2004), known professionally as John Peel, was an English disc jockey (DJ) and radio presenter. He was the longest-serving of the original BBC Radio 1 DJs, broadcasting regularly from 1967 until his death in 2004. Peel was one of the first broadcasters to play psychedelic rock and progressive rock records on British radio. He is widely acknowledged for promoting artists of multiple genres, including pop, dub reggae, punk rock and post-punk, electronic music and dance music, indie rock, extreme metal and British hip hop. Captain Beefheart
Don Van Vliet (; born Don Glen Vliet; January 15, 1941 – December 17, 2010) was an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and visual artist best known by the stage name Captain Beefheart. Conducting a rotating ensemble known as The Magic Band, he recorded 13 studio albums between 1967 and 1982. His music blended elements of blues, free jazz, rock music, rock, and avant-garde music, avant-garde composition with idiosyncratic rhythms, absurdism, absurdist wordplay, a loud, gravelly voice, and his claimed wide vocal range, though reports of it have varied from three octaves to seven and a half. ''Quirk Out'' is the debut mini album by Anglo-Irish experimental rock band Stump. After building up a following with their unique sound and live performances, Stump recorded ''Quirk Out'' as their second release with producer Hugh Jones at Rockfield Studios in July 1986, following the release of the ''Mud on a Colon'' EP earlier in the year. The band's aim for ''Quirk Out'' was to capture the band's energy as a live band on studio recordings. The record blends genres such as avant-garde, funk rock with indie rock sensibilities. The best known song from the album, "Buffalo", had already been released on the ''NME'' compilation ''C86'', an influential cassette compilation containing newly recorded music from different bands of the British independent music scene. ''A Fierce Pancake'' is the second and final album and only full-length studio album by Anglo-Irish experimental rock band Stump, released 7 March 1988 on Ensign Records. After the band had enjoyed some underground success in the 1980s, including the release of their critically acclaimed "Buffalo" single and '' Quirk Out'' mini-album in 1986, the band signed to major label Ensign Records and began work on ''A Fierce Pancake'' in 1987. A major part of the recording process was undertaken in Berlin's famous Hansa Studios, where many of the band's favourite albums by other artists had been recorded. Recording sessions were very tense and problematic.
