Michigan Firehouse Museum
The Michigan Firehouse Museum and Education Center is a fire museum dedicated to the history of firefighting in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is located at 110 West Cross Street in Ypsilanti, Michigan. History The Michigan Firehouse Museum is located in Ypsilanti's former fire station, which was built adjacent to the city's Depot Town neighborhood in 1898 and remained in service until 1975. That year, the city built a new station and sold the old one to a family who lived in the building. In 1998, the old station was purchased by Ann Arborites Howard and Norma Weaver, who then opened the museum that same year. The Michigan Firehouse Museum and Education Center was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 1999. In 2005, it was the only fire museum in the state open year-round, as well as the closest one to Metro Detroit. Ypsilanti (), commonly shortened to Ypsi, is a city in Washtenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2020 census, the city's population was 20,648. American LaFrance (ALF) was an American vehicle manufacturer which focused primarily on the production of fire engines, fire aerials, and emergency apparatus such as ambulance and rescue vehicles. Originally located in Elmira, New York, the final iteration of the company was located in Summerville, South Carolina. It also operated a Canadian plant in Toronto, Ontario, where it sold apparatus under the name LaFrance-Foamite, until 1971. Ward LaFrance, a unrelated competitor fire-apparatus manufacturer also based in Elmira Heights, New York, was founded by a LaFrance family member. Scio Township is a civil township of Washtenaw County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 20,081 at the 2010 census.
