Michele Godena
Michele Godena (born 30 June 1967) is an Italian chess player. He achieved the FIDE titles of International Master (IM) in 1988 and Grandmaster (GM) in 1996, following a plus score on board one for Italy at the Chess Olympiad in Yerevan. Godena is a five-time Italian champion. Career Godena has won five times the Italian Chess Championship, in 1992, 1993, 1995, 2005 and 2006. He was runner-up in 1990 and 1998. His 2006 victory was closely contested with the then 14-year-old Italian-American prodigy, International Master Fabiano Caruana. Both players finished the contest on 8 points from 11 rounds and Godena triumphed narrowly in the rapid and blitz play-off. He tied for 1st–4th with Andrei Sokolov, Dražen Sermek and Xie Jun at Cannes 1997. At the Aeroflot Open 2006 in Moscow, Godena tied for 1st–12th in the A2 group, finishing 12th on tiebreak with a rating performance of 2628. Middle Game
The middlegame is the portion of a chess game between the opening and the endgame. It is generally considered to begin when each player has completed the development of all or most of their pieces and brought their king to relative safety, and it is generally considered to end when only a few pieces remain on the board. However, there is no clear line between the opening and middlegame or between the middlegame and endgame. At master level, the opening analysis may go well into the middlegame; likewise, the middlegame blends into the endgame. Theory on the middlegame is less developed than the opening or endgames. A chess opening or simply an opening is the initial stage of a chess game. It usually consists of established theory; the other phases are the middlegame and the endgame. Many opening sequences have standard names such as the "Sicilian Defense". Sergei Shipov
Sergei Shipov (born 17 April 1966) is a Russian chess player, trainer, journalist and writer. He was awarded the title Grandmaster by FIDE in 1996. Career Shipov founded the chess website Crestbook where, among other services, he provides online commentary to current chess events in Russian. One of the most popular areas of the site is "Ask Shipov" where Shipov answers questions on chess-related topics. Shipov is also a chess trainer and a chess writer. Among other players, he worked with Alexandra Kosteniuk, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Daniil Dubov, Grigoriy Oparin, and Andrey Esipenko. Shipov wrote a book about a system for black in Sicilian Defence, "The Complete Hedgehog". He is also a strong blitz chess player with a rating around 2700 on the chess.com website. Elo Rating
The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in zero-sum games such as chess. It is named after its creator Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-American physics professor. The Elo system was invented as an improved chess-rating system over the previously used Harkness system, but is also used as a rating system in association football, American football, baseball, basketball, pool, table tennis, and various board games and esports. The difference in the ratings between two players serves as a predictor of the outcome of a match. Two players with equal ratings who play against each other are expected to score an equal number of wins. A player whose rating is 100 points greater than their opponent's is expected to score 64%; if the difference is 200 points, then the expected score for the stronger player is 76%. 33rd Chess Olympiad
The 33rd Chess Olympiad (, ''33-ya Shakhmatnaya olimpiada''; Kalmyk: 33-гче Шатрин олимпиад, ''33-gçe Şatrin olimpiad''), organized by FIDE and comprising an open and a women's tournament, took place between September 26 and October 13, 1998, in Elista, Kalmykia, Russia. There were 110 teams in the open event and 72 in the women's event. The Olympiad was the first international chess event to be held at Chess City. Bassem Amin
Bassem Amin (; born 9 September 1988) is an Egyptian chess player and medical doctor. He was awarded the title Grandmaster by FIDE in 2006. Amin is the highest rated Egyptian and African player and the only medical doctor to have a FIDE peak rating of 2700+. Amin is also a six-time and the current African chess champion.
