Michael Read
Michael Peter Read MBE (born 9 June 1941) is an English long-distance swimmer who has the third most crossings of the English Channel – 33 to date. The current ''Queen of the Channel'' is Chloë McCardel with 44 crossings. Competitive swimming Born in Brighton, Read began swimming relatively late at 14 years old. He joined Brighton Swimming Club in 1955 and became its youngest committee member in 1957. During the period from 1969 to 1971 he became a FINA judge, timekeeper, referee and starter and he remembers his time at the Edinburgh Commonwealth pool with great affection. English Schools champion, British Universities Champion, and second in the ASA National Championships in 1959, Read was selected to represent Great Britain in Swimming in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome but unfortunately due to injury, was never able to compete. Nikiti
Nikiti ( el, Νικήτη) is a village located 100 kilometers south-east of Thessaloniki on the Chalkidiki peninsula in Macedonia, Greece. It is the seat of both the municipal unit and municipality of Sithonia. The town has a preserved old part of town. The newer part of town is located on the seashore, where the beach and newly built marina are located. History The ancient Greek city of Galypsos was located south of Nikiti near Kastri beach. There are remains of an early Byzantine Greek church dating to the 5th century near Agios Georgos beach on the Nikiti foreshore. The old part of Nikiti village dates to the beginning of the 14th century when inhabitants moved inland to avoid pirate raids. Alison Streeter
Alison Jane Streeter MBE is a British long-distance swimmer. Biography Streeter has swum across the English Channel 43 times, the most crossings done by an individual until surpassed by Chloe McCardel on 13 October 2021. She also completed seven Channel crossings in one year. Her 1988 Channel swim from France to England of set a female record of 8 hours 48 minutes. She was the first woman to swim the Channel three ways non-stop in 1990, taking 34h40 min for the feat. In 1988, Streeter became the first woman to swim across the North Channel, between Northern Ireland and Scotland, a feat she repeated in 1989 and 1997. She currently holds the record for the highest number of crossings. She formerly worked as a currency trader in London, and now spends part of her life in Adelaide (Seacliff) and the summers in Dover as a Channel Swim boat pilot.
