Michael Maar
Michael Maar (born July 17, 1960, in Stuttgart) is a German literary scholar, germanist and author. For his 1995 doctoral dissertation on Thomas Mann, titled ''Geister und Kunst'', he was awarded the Johann Heinrich Merck Prize by the Deutsche Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung. He was himself elected a member of the academy in 2002. He was a Fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin from 1997 to 1998, and Visiting Professor at Stanford University in 2002. From 2005 to 2006 he was a Fellow of the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Stiftung. In 2008, he became a member of the Bayerische Akademie der Schönen Künste. His 2005 book ''The Two Lolitas'', as well as two articles in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and The Times Literary Supplement the previous year, argued that Vladimir Nabokov's 1955 novel ''Lolita'' was most likely based on an until-then little known 1916 short story by German author Heinz von Lichberg, also titled ''Lolita'' and featuring an identical theme. The Heinrich Mann Prize () is an essay prize that has been awarded since 1953, first by the East German Academy of Arts, then by the Academy of Arts, Berlin. ''The Magic Mountain'' (german: Der Zauberberg, links=no, ) is a novel by Thomas Mann, first published in German in November 1924. It is widely considered to be one of the most influential works of twentieth-century German literature. Mann started writing ''The Magic Mountain'' in 1912. It began as a much shorter narrative that comically revisited the aspects of ''Death in Venice'', a novella that he was preparing for publication. The newer work reflected his experiences and impressions during a period when his wife, who was suffering from a lung complaint, resided at Dr. Friedrich Jessen's ''Waldsanatorium'' in Davos, Switzerland for several months. Paul Maar
Paul Maar (; born 13 December 1937) is one of the most important modern German writers for children and young people. He is a novelist, playwright, translator and illustrator. Life Maar was born in Schweinfurt. After the early death of his mother he lived with his grandfather in the rural area of Theres in northern Bavaria. He went to school at the Gymnasium in Schweinfurt, and later studied at the State Academy of Arts in Stuttgart. He then worked as a stage designer and stage photographer for the Franconian castle theatre Massbach. After that he spent ten years as an art teacher. Since 1976, he has worked as a freelance writer.
