King Kelly
Michael Joseph "King" Kelly (December 31, 1857 – November 8, 1894), also commonly known as "$10,000 Kelly", was an American outfielder, catcher, and manager in various professional American baseball leagues including the National League, International Association, Players' League, and the American Association. He spent the majority of his 16-season playing career with the Chicago White Stockings and the Boston Beaneaters. Kelly was a player-manager three times in his career – in 1887 for the Beaneaters, in 1890 leading the Boston Reds (1890–91), Boston Reds to the Pennant (sports), pennant in the only season of the Players' League's existence, and in 1891 for the Cincinnati Kelly's Killers – before his retirement in 1893. He is also often credited with helping to popularize various strategies as a player such as the hit and run (baseball), hit and run, the hook slide, and the catcher's practice of backing up first base. Michael Kelly (physicist)
Michael Joseph Kelly FRS FREng (born 14 May 1949) is a New Zealand- British physicist. He was Prince Philip Professor of Technology in the Department of Engineering of the University of Cambridge from 2002 to 2016. Education Born in New Plymouth, New Zealand, Kelly went to Francis Douglas Memorial College in his High-school years, graduating he then went on to study at the Victoria University of Wellington for a BSc and MSc. He came to England in 1971 to study for a PhD at Cambridge under Volker Heine. Career After finishing his PhD in 1974, he worked for seven years on the electronic structure of metals and semiconductors as a post-doc researcher. Kelly joined the GEC Hirst Research Centre in 1981, working on the development of microwave devices. From 1992 to 2002 he was Professor of Physics and Electronics at the University of Surrey. Colonel Michael Joseph Kelly, (born 23 February 1960) is a former Australian politician who twice represented the Division of Eden-Monaro in the Parliament of Australia, from 2007 to 2013 and again from 2016 to 2020. He is a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP). Kelly was born in Adelaide and studied law at Macquarie University before joining the Australian Army in 1987. He went on to serve in Somalia, East Timor, Bosnia and Iraq. He was among senior Australian military personnel in the Iraq War. Kelly finished his military career in 2007 with the rank of colonel as Director of Army Legal Services. Michael Joseph Kelly (American Politician)
Michael Joseph Kelly (22 March 1850 – 11 January 1911) was an Irish-born American politician. Kelly was born in County Tipperary on 22 March 1850. When he was two years old, he and his parents emigrated the United States. For six years, Kelly lived in Port Byron, New York, until the family moved again, to Muscatine, Iowa. He was educated in Muscatine and trained as a tinsmith. Aged 18, Kelly relocated to Lytle City, in Iowa County. After one year, he relocated to Des Moines. Kelly married Margery Lytle, the daughter of Lytle City founder B. F. Lytle, in 1870. The couple raised eight children. From 1874 to 1883, Kelly again resided in Lytle City. Kelly subsequently moved to Williamsburg. While residing in Williamsburg, he chose to pursue education at the University of Iowa College of Law. He soon founded the general store Kelly & Lytle. Michael Joseph Kelley (December 2, 1875 – June 6, 1955) was an American Major League Baseball first baseman. He played one season in the majors with the Louisville Colonels. He then forged a 30-year career as a manager in the minor leagues and became a legendary figure in the "Twin Cities" of Minneapolis–St. Paul. Major League career Born in Templeton, Massachusetts, Kelley played only one season in the Major Leagues, with the 1899 Louisville Colonels of the National League. A right-handed hitter and thrower, he appeared in 76 games that season, and he batted .241 with three home runs and had 33 runs batted in. At the end of the season, the NL shrunk from 12 to eight teams and the Colonels were disbanded. Many Louisville players were acquired by the surviving Pittsburgh Pirates, but Kelley returned to the minors.
