Michael Hill International Violin Competition
The Michael Hill International Violin Competition is a biennial music competition for violinists aged between 18 and 28. It was founded by Michael Hill in 2001 as the Michael Hill World Violin Competition. Hill remains a major sponsor, claiming that "It is my dream that New Zealand will one day become a much more balanced society with not just wonderful sport – but also wonderful classical music." In 2004, the event became a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions. The event is held in New Zealand, with the first two semi-final rounds of competition conducted in Queenstown and the third and final rounds held in Auckland. There is a total prize pool of NZ$100,000, with the winner receiving $40,000. In 2009, the events gained about $500,000 worth of sponsorship. Joseph Lin (violinist)
Joseph Lin (; born 1978) is a Taiwanese-American violinist. From 2011 to 2018, he was the first violinist of the Juilliard String Quartet. Currently, he is on the violin and chamber music faculty of the Juilliard School in New York City. Early life and education Lin was born in the United States to immigrant parents from Taiwan. He attended the Juilliard School Pre-College Division and later graduated ''magna cum laude'' from Harvard College in 2000. Timothy Chooi
Timothy Chooi is a Canadian–American violinist and University of Ottawa professor of Chinese-Indonesian ethnic background. He won the First Prize at the 2018 International Joseph Joachim Violin Competition and Second Prize at the 2019 Queen Elisabeth Competition. He has also won prizes at the International Yehudi Menuhin Violin Competition, Michael Hill International Violin Competition and the Grand Prize at the 2010 Montreal ManuLife Competition. Nikki Chooi (born January 31, 1989) is an American-Canadian classical violinist. He is a prize winner of the Queen Elisabeth Music Competition and Tchaikovsky International Violin Competition and 1st prize winner of the 2013 Michael Hill International Violin Competition, Montreal Symphony Manulife Competition, and Klein International Strings Competition. Nikki is a soloist, educator, and current Concertmaster of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. He previously served as Concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in New York. Nadir Khashimov
Nadir Khashimov (born 16 August 1990) is a classical violinist who began his studies at the age of 7. He is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with violinists Pamela Frank and Shmuel Ashkenasi. Previous teachers include Vakhob Khashimov, Sergiu Schwartz and Patricio Cobos. He has been awarded scholarships from the Vladimir Spivakov International Foundation and is also the winner of the Woodruff Award for Excellence. Richard Lin () (born 6 July 1991 at United States) is a Taiwanese American violinist. He won competitions in Poland, United States, Singapore, Japan, and Taiwan. In 2013 he won the first prize in the Sendai International Music Competition. In 2015 he was the third prize laureate in 9th Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition Hannover. Sergey Olegovich Malov (russian: Сергей Олегович Малов, link=no; born 18 June 1983 in Leningrad, Soviet Union) is a Russian/Hungarian violinist and violist. Life Malov was born in Leningrad (now Saint-Petersburg) in 1983. His father Oleg Malov is a pianist and professor at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. Tessa Lark
Tessa Lark is an American concert violinist from Kentucky. Early life Lark was born and raised in Richmond, Kentucky. She started violin training at age six through the Suzuki method. Her musical career began performing and recording with her father's Gospel Bluegrass band, Narrow Road. She made her concerto debut at age 16 playing Mozart's Violin Concerto Number 3 in G major with the Cincinnati Symphony. Lark was accepted into Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music's Starling Preparatory Strings Project where she studied privately with Kurt Sassmannshaus. At age 16, Lark was accepted into The New England Conservatory (NEC), where she completed her Bachelor and master's degrees. Josef Špaček (born October 17, 1986) is a Czech solo violinist and until 2019/20 season a concertmaster of the Czech Philharmonic orchestra. He performs on the ca. 1732 “LeBrun; Bouthillard” Guarneri del Gesù violin, generously on loan from Ingles & Hayday. Early life and education Špaček was born in 1986 in Třebíč, Czech Republic, to a family with musical tradition. Bella Hristova (born 28 December 1985) is a Bulgarian-American violinist. Early life Hristova was born in Pleven, Bulgaria to Russian and Bulgarian parents. She began her studies on the violin at the age of six. By the age of twelve, she enrolled in master classes with Ruggiero Ricci at the Mozarteum University Salzburg and later attended the Curtis Institute of Music in 2003. Bartosz Woroch (born 27 September 1984) is a Polish-born violinist and prize winner at major international competitions such as the Pablo Sarasate in Pamplona, Spain, in 2003 and the 2005 Michael Hill International Violin Competition in New Zealand.
