Michael Gibson (Australian Footballer)
Michael Gibson (born 31 October 1965) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy and the Brisbane Bears in the Victorian/Australia Football League (VFL/AFL). Gibson, a half back flanker, was a Coorparoo premiership player in 1984 and played at Fitzroy the following season. He then returned to Coorparoo in 1986 and participated in another premiership team. A member of Brisbane's inaugural VFL list, he spent five seasons with the club. Amongst his 15 interstate matches for Queensland were appearances at the 1988 Adelaide Bicentennial Carnival. He had also been an All-Australian junior for his state. The defender went on to become a QFL coach and had stints at both Coorparoo and Mount Gravatt Mount Gravatt is a southern suburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and a prominent hill and lookout within this suburb (). Coorparoo Football Club
Coorparoo Football Club is an Australian rules football club based in the Brisbane suburb of Coorparoo from 1935 until the senior club folded in 1995. The club left the QAFL following the 1993 season due to the financial strain experienced since the recent introduction of a minimum salary cap, and joined the Brisbane Australian Football League (BAFL) for the 1994 and 1995 seasons. The "Coorparoo Junior Australian Football Club" has continued as a stand-alone club since 1996 to the present. The "Coorparoo (Seniors) Kings Football Club" also operates out of the same oval in Birubi Street. Both teams club colours are navy blue with a white monogram. Fitzroy Football Club
The Fitzroy Football Club is an Australian rules football club currently competing in the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Formed in 1883 to represent the inner-Melbourne municipality of Fitzroy, the club was a member of the Victorian Football Association (VFA), before becoming a foundation member of the breakaway Victorian Football League (VFL/AFL) in 1897. Fitzroy won a total of eight VFL premierships, of which seven (1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916 and 1922) were won whilst they were nicknamed the Maroons and one (1944) as the Gorillas. The decision of the club to change its nickname to the Lions in 1957 coincided with what history now records as the beginning of decades of poor on-field performance and financial losses that eventually resulted in the club being placed into administration, ultimately leaving the AFL at the end of the 1996 season. The Brisbane Football Club, nicknamed the Bears, was a professional Australian rules football club based in Queensland on the Gold Coast (relocated to Brisbane in 1993). The club participated in the Victorian/Australian Football League (VFL/AFL) between 1987 and 1996, and entered the league as the first of two non-Victorian expansion teams. It was the first privately owned club in the league's history. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. 1988 Adelaide Bicentennial Carnival
The 1988 Adelaide Bicentennial Carnival was the 22nd edition of the Australian National Football Carnival, an Australian rules football State of Origin competition. Australia was celebrating its Bicentenary in 1988, so the carnival was known as the 'Bicentennial Carnival'. It took place over four days from 2 March until 5 March, and the matches were played at Football Park and Norwood Oval. Ten teams were involved, including all the states and territories, making it the most heavily contested competition. They were divided into two sections. South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia and New South Wales were in Section One.
