Michael Gelven
Michael Gelven, (1937-2018) was a Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Northern Illinois University, where he taught for 46 years. Gelven held a Ph.D. in philosophy from Washington University, penned a well known commentary on Martin Heidegger's ''Being and Time'', and wrote several books as well as numerous scholarly articles. Gelven was primarily interested in continental philosophy and had a wide range of specialties including: ontology, metaphysics, Heidegger, Kant, Nietzsche, philosophy in literature, and the philosophy of war. Northern Illinois University (NIU) is a public research university in DeKalb, Illinois. It was founded as Northern Illinois State Normal School on May 22, 1895, by Illinois Governor John P. Altgeld as part of an expansion of the state's system for producing college-educated teachers. In addition to the main campus in DeKalb, it has satellite centers in Chicago, Naperville, Rockford, and Oregon, Illinois. The university is composed of seven degree-granting colleges and has a student body of approximately 16,000 with over 240,000 alumni. Heidegger
Martin Heidegger (; ; 26 September 188926 May 1976) was a German philosopher who is best known for contributions to phenomenology, hermeneutics, and existentialism. He is among the most important and influential philosophers of the 20th century. He has been widely criticized for supporting the Nazi Party after his election as rector at the University of Freiburg in 1933, and there has been controversy about the relationship between his philosophy and Nazism. In Heidegger's fundamental text ''Being and Time'' (1927), "Dasein" is introduced as a term for the type of being that humans possess. Dasein has been translated as "being there". Heidegger believes that Dasein already has a "pre-ontological" and non-abstract understanding that shapes how it lives. This mode of being he terms " being-in-the-world".
