Michael G. Walsh
Michael Gerard Walsh (September 8, 1906 – August 16, 1993) was an Irish Steeplechase trainer and founder of the Stoneybrook steeplechase in Southern Pines, North Carolina. Uncle of hall of fame jockey Thomas M. Walsh Personal life He was born in Kildorrery, Co. Cork, Ireland on September 8, 1906 To Thomas and Regina Walsh, owners of the Walsh Corner House Pub in Kildorrery. Walsh immigrated from Ireland to the United States in 1925 after a falling out with his father, Thomas. He died on August 16, 1993 at his home in Southern Pines after a 50 year career in the horse industry. Steeplechase (horse Racing)
A steeplechase is a distance horse race in which competitors are required to jump diverse fence and ditch obstacles. Steeplechasing is primarily conducted in Ireland (where it originated), the United Kingdom, Canada, United States, Australia, and France. The name is derived from early races in which orientation of the course was by reference to a church steeple, jumping fences and ditches and generally traversing the many intervening obstacles in the countryside. Modern usage of the term "steeplechase" differs between countries. In Ireland and the United Kingdom, it refers only to races run over large, fixed obstacles, in contrast to "hurdle" races where the obstacles are much smaller. Kildorrery () is a village in north County Cork, Ireland. It lies at the crossroads of the N73 road from Mallow to Mitchelstown and the R512 from Kilmallock to Fermoy. This hilltop village has views to the east of the Galtee Mountains and Knockmealdown Mountains with Slievenamon in the distance. Ted Walsh (born 14 April 1950) is an Irish amateur jockey turned racehorse trainer who was born and raised in Co. Cork but based in Kill, County Kildare, Ireland. Ted is also father to amateur Irish National Hunt jockey, Katie Walsh and professional national hunt jockey Ruby Walsh. Jockey As a rider, he won 4 Cheltenham Festival races. His first was in the 1974 Kim Muir on Castleruddery. His last was in the 1986 Foxhunter Chase on Attitude adjuster. He also won the 1979 Queen Mother Champion Chase on Hilly Way. Another horse he had success on was Daring Run who won the 1981 and 1982 Aintree Hurdle, was a close third in the 1981 Champion Hurdle. He won the Irish amateur jockeys title 11 times. Ruby Walsh
Rupert Walsh (born 14 May 1979 in Kill, County Kildare, Ireland) is an Irish former jockey. He is the second child, and eldest son, of former champion amateur jockey Ted Walsh and his wife Helen. Walsh is the third most prolific winner in British and Irish jump racing history behind only Sir Anthony McCoy and Richard Johnson. Career Showing talent from an early age, Walsh won the Irish amateur title twice, in 1996/97 (aged 18) and 1997/98, before turning professional. National Museum Of Racing And Hall Of Fame
The National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame was founded in 1950 in Saratoga Springs, New York, to honor the achievements of American Thoroughbred race horses, jockeys, and trainers. In 1955, the museum moved to its current location on Union Avenue near Saratoga Race Course, at which time inductions into the hall of fame began. Each spring, following the tabulation of the final votes, the announcement of new inductees is made, usually during Kentucky Derby Week in early May. The actual inductions are held in mid-August during the Saratoga race meeting.
