Michael G. McGovern
Michael George McGovern (born July 1, 1964) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He has served as bishop of the Diocese of Belleville in Illinois since 2020. Biography Early life Michael McGovern was born in Chicago, Illinois on July 1, 1964. He is a native of the Chicago's Beverly neighborhood, and grew up in a large Catholic family. He attended St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago serving as a lector there and at his family's church. McGovern attended Loyola University Chicago, where he earned a Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree. After working for four years, he entered the University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, Illinois in 1990. Priesthood On May 21, 1994, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin ordained McGovern to the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Chicago in Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. The hierarchy of the Catholic Church consists of its bishops, priests, and deacons. In the ecclesiological sense of the term, "hierarchy" strictly means the "holy ordering" of the Church, the Body of Christ, so to respect the diversity of gifts and ministries necessary for genuine unity (). The Cathedral of Saint Peter is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Belleville, located in Belleville, Illinois. The cathedral parish of Saint Peter was founded in 1842 at a location east of the present structure, and named after Saint Barnabas the Apostle; it was rededicated to Saint Peter in 1847. By 1863, the congregation recognized the need for a larger structure. It constructed a brick church on the cathedral's present site which it dedicated in 1866. In 1887, Pope Leo XIII created the Diocese of Belleville from the southern portion of the Diocese of Alton (now the Diocese of Springfield) and named Reverend John Janssen as the first bishop.
