Michael Foster (American Writer)
Michael Foster (1904-1956) was an American novelist, journalist, screenwriter and cartoonist. Personal Foster was born August 29, 1904, in Hardy, Arkansas, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl D. Foster. His nickname was "Gully." He was a graduate of the University of Washington and the Chicago Art Institute. Foster married his literary agent, novelist Jane Hardy of New York. Their children were Peter Michael Foster and Garrett Ann Foster of San Francisco. Foster died of a stroke on March 25, 1956, in Reno, Nevada. Career Foster began his journalism career with the ''Brooklyn Eagle.'' He was a reporter and cartoonist for newspapers in Salina, Kansas; Los Angeles, California, and, by 1937, Seattle, Washington. In 1926, he was working on the '' Los Angeles Express,'' a daily newspaper. Michael Foster (born 5 September 1985) is a Papua New Guinean football player who plays as a midfielder for Hekari United, and for the Papua New Guinea national team. He currently is the record-holder for the most caps for the Papua New Guinea national team, with 27, having made his senior international debut aged 17. He was also part of the historic Hekari United side which won the 2009–10 OFC Champions League, becoming the first club outside of Australia and New Zealand to represent Oceania Football Confederation, Oceania at the FIFA Club World Cup. Michael Foster (Tolkien Scholar)
Michael Foster (b. 1947), known as Mike Foster, is an emeritus professor of English, and a Tolkien scholar. In 1978 he pioneered the teaching of Tolkien studies at university level. Biography Michael Alan Foster was educated at Spalding High School. He obtained his first degree in Arts at Marquette University in 1968, and that year became a teacher at Spalding High School. He then took a Master's degree at Marquette. In 1971 he joined the staff of the English department of Illinois Central College in Peoria, Illinois, eventually becoming a professor there. In addition, he worked as a journalist for the Peoria Journal Star. He taught there until he retired in 2005. While at Illinois Central College he taught fantasy literature from 1974, and a special studies course focusing entirely on J. R. R. Tolkien from 1978. Michael Dylan Foster is a professor of Folklore and the current Chair of the East Asian Languages and Cultures department at the University of California, Davis. He has taught in some capacity since 1989, starting in Japan teaching the English language on the Japanese Exchange and Teaching Programme, returning to the United States to teach Japanese folklore and literature. In addition to his academic career, which has mainly focused on Japanese literature and culture, he has published several short stories, articles, and novels. Much of his work on Japanese folklore has centered on tales of the supernatural—the strange and the weird. That is the subject of his first book, ''Pandemonium and Parade: Japanese Monsters and the Culture of Yôkai'', which received the Chicago Folklore Prize in 2009. Michael Beresford Foster (1903–1959) was a tutor in philosophy of Oxford University's Christ Church, Oxford, Christ Church. Sir Michael Foster (8 March 1836 – 29 January 1907) was an English physiologist. He was instrumental in organizing the Cambridge Biological School and acted as Secretary of the Royal Society. Biography Foster was born in Huntingdon, Huntingdonshire, in March 1836, the son of Michael Foster, FRCS. He was educated at Huntingdon Grammar school and University College School, London. After graduating in medicine in 1859, he began to practise in his native town, but in 1867 he returned to London as teacher of practical physiology at University College London, where two years afterwards he became professor. In 1870 he was appointed by Trinity College, Cambridge, to its praelectorship in physiology, and thirteen years later he became the first occupant of the newly created chair of physiology in the university, holding it till 1903. Sir Michael Foster (1689–1763) was an English judge. Life Foster was the son of Michael Foster, an attorney, and was born at Marlborough, Wiltshire, on 16 December 1689. After attending the free school of his native town, he matriculated at Exeter College, Oxford, 7 May 1705. He does not appear to have taken any degree. He was admitted a student of the Middle Temple on 23 May 1707, and was called to the bar in May 1713. Meeting with little success in London, he retired to Marlborough, whence he afterwards removed to Bristol, where as a local counsel he gained a great reputation. In August 1735 he was chosen recorder of Bristol, and in Easter term 1736 became a Serjeant-at-law. Michael Sydney Foster (born 3 February 1939) is an English former footballer who played as a winger in the Football League for Colchester United and Millwall. He was also signed to Leicester City and Norwich City, though he made no appearances for those clubs. Career Born in Leicester, Foster came through the ranks at hometown club Leicester City, but was never selected for the first team. He transferred to Colchester United nominally in 1961, making his professional debut on the opening day of the 1961–62 season in a 3–0 victory over Stockport County at Layer Road. He scored his first goal for the club on 26 August during a 2–2 draw away at Oldham Athletic.
