Michael E. McCormick
Michael E. McCormick is Corbin A. McNeill Professor Emeirtus of the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at the U. S. Naval Academy. He is one of the pioneers of modern wave energy research. He began his career in 1958 as a hydrodynamicist at the U. S. Wave Energy
Wave power is the capture of energy of wind waves to do useful work – for example, electricity generation, water desalination, or pumping water. A machine that exploits wave power is a wave energy converter (WEC). Waves are generated by wind passing over the sea's surface. As long as the waves propagate slower than the wind speed just above, energy is transferred from the wind to the waves. Air pressure differences between the windward and leeward sides of a wave crest and surface friction from the wind cause shear stress and wave growth. Wave power is distinct from tidal power, which captures the energy of the current caused by the gravitational pull of the Sun and Moon. Other forces can create currents, including breaking waves, wind, the Coriolis effect, cabbeling, and temperature and salinity differences. David Taylor Model Basin
The David Taylor Model Basin (DTMB) is one of the largest ship model basins—test facilities for the development of ship design—in the world. DTMB is a field activity of the Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center. History In 1896, David Watson Taylor designed and supervised construction of the Washington Navy Yard's Experimental Model Basin which was at that time the best facility in the world. That facility was a significant design testing capability before, during, and after World War I. Inadequacies in that facility led the navy to look for a new model capability. The new navy modeling facility – named for David Taylor – was built in 1939 in today's community of Carderock just west of Bethesda, Maryland in Montgomery County.
