Michael E. Fortney
Michael E. Fortney is a retired major general in the United States Air Force. He was Vice Commander of the Air Force Global Strike Command from 2015 until his retirement in 2017. Military career Fortney originally enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1978. He was commissioned an officer in 1986 and was stationed at Minot Air Force Base. In 1990, Fortney became Executive Officer of the 57th Air Division at Minot. In 1992, Fortney was stationed at Francis E. Warren Air Force Base. He was then assigned to Vandenberg Air Force Base. After serving at United States Strategic Command from 1999 to 2001, he returned to Vandenberg Air Force Base. From 2004 to 2005, Fortney was stationed at Tinker Air Force Base. In 2005, he returned to Francis E. Warren Air Force Base and assumed command of the 90th Operations Group. Meritorious Service Medal (United States)
__NOTOC__ The Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) is a military award presented to members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguished themselves by outstanding meritorious achievement or service to the United States subsequent to January 16, 1969. The MSM was previously awarded as a decoration for achievement during peacetime, but effective September 11, 2001 this decoration may also be bestowed in lieu of the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in a designated combat theater. Normally, the acts or services rendered must be comparable to that required for the Legion of Merit but in a duty of lesser, though considerable, responsibility. The Joint Forces Staff College (JFSC), located in Norfolk, Virginia, was established as the Armed Forces Staff College in 1946 and incorporated into the National Defense University in August 1981. Squadron Officer School
Squadron Officer School (SOS), is a 5.5-week-long Professional Military Education (PME) course for U.S. Air Force and Space Force Captains, Department of the Air Force Civilian (DAFC) equivalents and International Officers. It fulfills the U.S. Air Force's requirement for primary developmental education (PDE). SOS is based at Maxwell AFB, Alabama, and the in-residence version of the course is taught there. A service star is a miniature bronze or silver five-pointed star inch (4.8 mm) in diameter that is authorized to be worn by members of the eight uniformed services of the United States on medals and ribbons to denote an additional award or service period.
