Michael Cooperson
Michael Cooperson is an American scholar and translator of Arabic literature. He is professor of Arabic at UCLA. He has written two books: ''Classical Arabic Biography: The Heirs of the Prophets in the Age of al-Ma'mun'' and ''Al-Mamun (Makers Of The Muslim World)''. He has translated a number of works from Arabic and French including: * Abdelfattah Kilito's ''The Author and His Doubles: Essays on Classical Arabic Culture'' * Khairy Shalaby's ''The Time-Travels of the Man Who Sold Pickles and Sweets'' * Jurji Zaydan's ''The Caliph's Heirs — Brothers at War: the Fall of Baghdad'' Cooperson has also taught at the Middlebury School of Arabic and Stanford University. In 2021, he won the Sheikh Zayed Book Award for translation from Arabic to English. Arabic Literature
Arabic literature ( ar, الأدب العربي / ALA-LC: ''al-Adab al-‘Arabī'') is the writing, both as prose and poetry, produced by writers in the Arabic language. The Arabic word used for literature is '' Adab'', which is derived from a meaning of etiquette, and which implies politeness, culture and enrichment. Arabic literature emerged in the 5th century with only fragments of the written language appearing before then. The Qur'an, widely regarded as the finest piece of literature in the Arabic language, would have the greatest lasting effect on Arab culture and its literature. Arabic literature flourished during the Islamic Golden Age, but has remained vibrant to the present day, with poets and prose-writers across the Arab world, as well as in the Arab diaspora, achieving increasing success. Abdelfattah Kilito
Abdelfattah Kilito ( ar, عبد الفتاح كيليطو; born 10 April 1945, in Rabat) is a Moroccan writer. He is the author of several books in Arabic and in French. He has also written articles for magazines such as ''Poétique'' and ''Studia Islamica''. Some of the awards Kilito has won are the Great Moroccan Award (1989), the Atlas Award (1996), the French Academy Award (le prix du Rayonnement de la langue française) (1996) and Sultan Al Owais Prize for Criticism and Literature Studies (2006). Life Kilito was born in 1945 in Rabat, Morocco. He was raised in the medina of the old city of Rabat. Kilito learned French from the age of six. He also studied German, and was trained as a scholar of classical Arabic literature in the Faculté des Lettres at the Mohammed V University. Jurji Zaydan
Jurji Zaydan ( ar, جرجي زيدان, ; December 14, 1861 – July 21, 1914) was a prolific Lebanese novelist, journalist, editor and teacher, most noted for his creation of the magazine ''Al-Hilal (magazine), Al-Hilal'', which he used to serialize his twenty three historical novels. His primary goal, as a writer and intellectual during the Nahda, was to make the common Arabic population know their own history through the entertaining medium of the novel. He has enjoyed a widespread popularity. He is also considered to have been one of the first thinkers to help formulate the theory of Arab nationalism. Sheikh Zayed Book Award
The Sheikh Zayed Book Award is a literary award begun in the UAE. It is presented yearly to "Arab writers, intellectuals, publishers as well as young talent whose writings and translations of humanities have scholarly and objectively enriched Arab cultural, literary and social life." The award was established in memory of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the principal architect of United Arab Emirates, the authoritarian ruler of Abu Dhabi and president of the UAE for over 30 years (1971–2004). The first award was in 2007. The total value of the prizes is making it one of the richest literary awards in the world. The "Cultural Person of the Year" is the premier category, it includes an award of one million Dirhams (around $300,000) while the other categories receive around $200,000 each.
