Michael Canavan
Michael A. Canavan is a retired United States Army Lieutenant general (United States), lieutenant general and former Federal Aviation Administration security official. Canavan presently sits on the board of defense contractor USfalcon. Canavan commanded Special Operations Command Europe and the Joint Special Operations Command, and retired after serving as the chief of staff for the United States European Command. On the morning of September 11th, he was in Puerto Rico and had failed to designate a replacement. In the wake of the September 11 attacks Canavan resigned his position as Associate Administrator for Civil Aviation Security at the FAA amid controversy over Federal Air Marshal Service, Air Marshal assignments to Bush Administration Cabinet members and confidence in his leadership. The Federal Air Marshal Service (FAMS) is a United States federal law enforcement agency under the supervision of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) of the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Because of the nature of their occupation, federal air marshals (FAMs) travel often. They must also train to be highly proficient marksmen. 1996 Croatia USAF CT-43 Crash
On April 3, 1996, a United States Air Force Boeing CT-43A (Flight IFO-21) crashed on approach to Dubrovnik, Croatia, while on an official trade mission. The aircraft, a Boeing 737-200 originally built as T-43A navigational trainer and later converted into a CT-43A executive transport aircraft, was carrying United States Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown and 34 other people. While attempting an instrument approach to Dubrovnik Airport, the airplane crashed into a mountainside. An Air Force technical sergeant, Shelly Kelly, survived the initial impact, but died en route to a hospital. Everyone else on board died at the scene of the crash. The aircraft was operated by the 76th Airlift Squadron of the 86th Airlift Wing, based at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. The September 11 attacks, commonly known as 9/11, were four coordinated suicide terrorist attacks carried out by al-Qaeda against the United States on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. In the United States Armed Forces, a lieutenant general is a three-star general officer in the United States Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Space Force.
