Michael Birkeland
Michael Birkeland (16 December 183024 May 1896) was a Norwegian historian, civil servant and politician. He was born at Eigersund in Rogaland, Norway. In 1855, he was awarded his cand. jur. at the University of Christiania (now University of Oslo). In 1852, he became an assistant in the National Archives of Norway (''Riksarkivet''). In 1863, he took over the position of national archivist. He co-founded the Norwegian Historical Association in 1869, and edited the academic journal '' Historisk Tidsskrift'' from 1869 to 1879. He was a member of the Storting from 1880 to 1885. Eigersund
Eigersund is a municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. It is in the traditional district of Dalane. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Egersund. The town was known for its pottery factory (closed in 1979) and it is among Norway's biggest fishing ports. The villages of Helleland, Hellvik, and Hestnes are also in Eigersund. The island of Eigerøya lies just off shore from Egersund. The island has several well-known businesses and attractions including the Eigerøy war memorial from World War II. The municipality is the 228th largest by area out of the 356 municipalities in Norway. Eigersund is the 82nd most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 14,860. Knut Helle
Knut Helle (19 December 1930 – 27 June 2015) was a Norwegian historian. A professor at the University of Bergen from 1973 to 2000, he specialized in the late medieval history of Norway. He has contributed to several large works. Early life, education and marriage He was born in Larvik as the son of school inspector Hermann Olai Helle (1893–1973) and teacher Berta Marie Malm (1906–1991). He was the older brother of politician Ingvar Lars Helle. The family moved to Hetland when Knut Helle was seventeen years old. He took the examen artium in Stavanger in 1949, and a teacher's education in Kristiansand in 1952. He studied philology in Oslo and Bergen, and graduated with the cand.philol. degree in 1957. National Archivist Of Norway
The national archivist ( no, Riksarkivar) of Norway is the professional and administrative manager of the National Archives of Norway and the National Archival Services of Norway. In addition, the national archivist bears direct responsibility with regard to legislation and regulations. The position was created in 1839. Henrik Wergeland was appointed the first national archivist in 1840 and entered office in 1841. At that time, the position was limited to serving as head of the National Archives. The Norwegian Historical Association ( no, Den norske historiske forening, HIFO) is a Norwegian historical organization. The Association was founded in 1869 by Michael Birkeland and Ludvig Ludvigsen Daae. It works to promote historical research and to strengthen history in higher education and in public. Its publishes the academic journal ''Historisk Tidsskrift (Norway), Historisk Tidsskrift'', which it commenced in 1871. The association also publishes the magazine ''Historikeren''. Additionally the association is co-owner of ''Scandinavian Journal of History''. In 1990, the association merged with the organizations ''Norsk historikerforening'' (founded 1982) and ''Norsk komité for historisk vitskap'' (founded 1927).
